  3. 3. <ul><li>A city-state is an independent country whose territory consists solely of a single major city and the area immediately surrounding it. </li></ul><ul><li>In center of Sumerian Cities was a temple called a ziggurat </li></ul><ul><li>Each city had their own favorite god they prayed too. </li></ul><ul><li>Sumer was located between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers </li></ul><ul><li>Very fertile lands called the fertile crescent </li></ul><ul><li>Farmers invented irrigation to help grow more food and control flooding of the rivers. </li></ul>

  9. 9. <ul><li>Levees were walls that were used to control flooding of the rivers </li></ul><ul><li>Division of labor or specialization is when people can do different jobs like famer; inn keeper, craftsman </li></ul><ul><li>Mesopotamia is an area of the middle east included the civilizations of Sumer, Akkad and Babylon. </li></ul>
  10. 10. <ul><li>Each city state of Sumer was ruled by a Ensi he acted as ruler and high priest of the city-state. </li></ul><ul><li>First civilization to come up with written laws and form of government </li></ul><ul><li>Agriculture or farming is a way to improve the land and grow food. </li></ul>
