  2. 2. It sounds like science fiction, but it’scloser than you may think: packagingthat can take on the role of advisor —an advisor with expertise in every field, available at any location and right roundthe clock. All this is made possible by a smart chip.Packaging as advisorSmart packaging | Gespot
  3. 3. The chipIt’s a tiny piece of equipment, andwith time it will only get smaller – thedevelopers are hard at work on thatalready. A chip looks like an ingeniousnetwork of tiny wires and plates. Al thechip needs is a little sunlight to powerit and the chip can get to work, takingmeasurements and storing the data.Chips can measure temperatures, detect odours and distinguish betweentextures, all properties that allowinformation about a product to bemeasured and stored, and conclusionsto be drawn.Smart packaging | GespotSmart packaging | Gespot
  4. 4. © Holst Centre/Marc KoetseBecause chips are so tiny they canbe inserted in all kinds of packaging. So for example a chip can measuretemperature to determine when wine isat the correct temperature for drinking.Or think of a ship with a cargo of palletsof bananas: the chip can maintain arecord of the conditions the bananaspass through on their journey to thesupermarket. In this way the packaging takes on acompletely new role: no longer simplythere to protect and transport theproduct, the packaging now functions asan advisor, quality controller or a stand-in for our own senses.Smart packagingSmart packaging | GespotSmart packaging | Gespot
