Hmong Hill Tribes

  1. 1. The Hmong Hill Tribe of northern Thailand Meo
  2. 4. <ul><li>This tribe, also known as the Meo, are nomads who have communities present across South East Asia as well as China. </li></ul>
  3. 5. <ul><li>There are believed to be a total of 65,000 Hmong living in Thailand, Chiang Mai , Chiang Rai and Phetchaban. </li></ul>
  4. 6. <ul><li>There are about four million Hmong living in southern China and this tribe has strong cultural similarities with Chinese people.  </li></ul>
  5. 8. <ul><li>Apart from the cultivation of opium, the Hmong hill tribe are renowned animal breeders who produce good quality ponies. </li></ul>
  6. 9. <ul><li>In Laos, a significant number of Hmong / Mong people fought against the communist - nationalist Pathet Lao during the Secret War . </li></ul><ul><li>When the Pathet Lao took over the government in 1975, Hmong / Mong people were singled out for retribution, resulting in many fleeing to Thailand . </li></ul>
