  2. 2. Background• Location – Region North America – 30 miles NE of Mexico City• Built – Started 100 BC – Continued 250 AD – Believed to have been built by Toltec• Sizes – 32 sq mi – Pyramid of the Sun base equal to Egypts Great Pyramid – Population 125,000+ 2
  3. 3. People and Beliefs• Beliefs – Name means "where man met the gods." – 10 Different Gods – Great Goddess of Teotihuacan – Aztecs believed that the gods created the universe at this site.• Civilization and Structures – Known for its large residential complexes. – Teotihuacano people – Pyramid of the Sun and Moon – Avenue of the Dead 3
  4. 4. Avenue of the Dead• Main street of Teotihuacan.• Runs for more than 2.5 km• Begins from the Moon Plaza to the North and extends beyond the Ciudadela and the Great Compound complexes to the South.• According to Millon the avenue continued even further South, ending near the edge of the mountains. 4
  5. 5. Avenue of the Dead• Divided the city into two sections.• Apartment compounds with pyramidal constructions were arranged on both sides of the avenue, often symmetrically and sharing the same orientation.• This highly planned city- layout suggests that the avenue may have been planned since its earliest phases of urbanization. 5
  6. 6. The Sun Pyramid• The Sun Pyramid was excavated in the first decade of this century by Leopordo Batres.• Since that time, two tunnels have been excavated into the core of the pyramid.• Providing more information about its chronology and substructure. 6
  7. 7. The Sun Pyramid• The Sun Pyramid is approximately 215 by 215m at the base, and about 63m high.• It was significantly enlarged at least twice in later periods, resulting in a final size of 225m along each side.• The pyramid was located on the Eastside of the Avenue of the Dead in the Northern half of the city.• It is believed by certain scholars that the cave was used for ritual activities. 7
  8. 8. Pyramid of the Moon• Located at the Northern end of the Avenue of the Dead, the principal axis of the city of Teotihuacan.• The pyramid, facing towards the South, was constructed as the principal monument of the Plaza of the Moon.• For many years it was believed that the pyramid contained earlier structures within its walls.• The Pyramid of the Moon excavations began in 1998, archaeologists could only guess at how many there were and how they had been constructed.• Over the last four years, as a result of the fieldwork that has been carried out, a large quantity of information and materials have been obtained. All of these materials are now in the process of being analyzed.• The team plans to continue the excavations of the Pyramid of the Moon and the adjacent areas over the next few years. 8
  9. 9. Ciudadela• The Ciudadela is a huge enclosure located at the geographic center of the city.• It measures about 400 m on a side and the interior space is surrounded by four large platforms surmounted by pyramids.• The main plaza had a capacity of about 100,000 persons without much crowding.• One of the main functions of this closed huge space may have been ritual performance. 9
