  2. 2. A practice that aspires to illuminate ourpresent circumstances and the conditions of their historical emergence, to facilitate the flourishing of possibilities for people to imagine and govern theirown collective futures, and to better the chances that these will be humane.
  3. 3. What is theSocial Science Centre?
  4. 4. An independent educationalco-operative that works toproduce critical knowledge inorder to improve the quality of ourcollective social life.
  5. 5. The Centre is run as a not-for-profit co-operative. This meansthat we strive to organise it onthe basis of democratic, non-hierachical, consensus-orientedprinciples, with all members –student-scholars and teacher-scholars alike – having equalinvolvement in how the Centreoperates.
  6. 6. Members of the SSC - Scholars -work across the fields ofSociology, Politics, Philosophy,Economics, History, Journalismand Visual Arts to pose criticalquestions about the world,understand complex socialproblems and act on situationson everyday life.
  7. 7. A core principle of the Centre isthat teacher-scholars andstudent-scholars have much tolearn from each other.
  8. 8. The co-operative principles onwhich the management of theCentre is based extend to theways in which courses are taughtand research is conducted.
  9. 9. The SSC is entirely self-funded.The Centre accepts monies, andother forms of ‘payment in kind’,from donors who share ourethics and values. Members willdonate their time and expertisefreely and will not receive anypayment.

Student-scholars will not earn auniversity degree through theirstudies, but will produce a peer-reviewed portfolio of work andreceive a certificate in highereducation, along with a writtentranscript detailing theiracademic, intellectual, andwhere relevant their social andpolitical accomplishments
