In addition to his professional involvement in the energy sector, David Lawrence supports higher education through his appointment as the advisory board chairman of the Yale Climate and Energy Institute (YCEI). Founded in order to study the relationship between modern energy use and climate change, the YCEI engages in several research initiatives. One focuses on the way that environmental health impacts human health. Named the Climate System and Human Health Initiative, the project engages Yale students and faculty in efforts to provide politicians and the public with accurate facts that illustrate the risks of climactic neglect.

Additionally, it seeks to determine unconventional hydrocarbons’ viability as a transition fuel between current resources and renewable energy. A third initiative of the YCEI is to develop detailed models that can forecast future climactic conditions. By partnering with other like- minded educational groups in the Northeastern United States, this YCEI initiative seeks to incorporate a range of factors into these high-resolution models to predict the effects of a changing environment on areas such as public health, the economy, and land use in the Northeast.
