11. 11. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 11 Narthex As you enter the building from the exterior gathering space, you are welcomed by a sunlight-filled Narthex. This space acts as a threshold from the outside to the Liturgical Narthex to allow the believers to make the transition from everyday life and, after the liturgy, it helps them return to daily life with the evangelization message and to live out the mystery that has been celebrated. This space also provides an area for social gathering where you can sit down in a “Living Room” atmosphere. This space also acts as an area of access to the Daily Chapel. In this space, people come together to move in procession and to prepare for the celebration of the Eucharist. It also allows for the gathering in which many important liturgical moments occur: Easter Vigil, Rite of Welcoming, Funeral Rites, etc.

13. 13. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 13 Liturgical Narthex This space is created as a transitional space between the Narthex and the Nave allowing the assembly to enter into a deeper spiritual sense as the journey continues to the Eucharistic Table. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel located in this space allows for the personal prayer before entering the communal celebration space of the Nave. Celebrations such as RCIA rites, processions, etc., are carried out in this place. To the bottom at the curved wall is a space for wakes locating the deceased in visual proximity to the Baptismal Font. Seasonal arts and appointments can be located in this space to remind us of such special days in the liturgical calendar including statues celebrating saint feasts, banners, etc.

17. 17. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 17 Reconciliation Chapel This important sacrament should remind us of the gift of God’s forgiving love. The chapel will allow the faithful to prepare his/her thoughts before participation in the sacrament of reconciliation. A separate space has been provided with seats and devotional art space. The design of the rooms will allow for face-to-face confession or anonymity; sitting, kneeling or standing as the penitent chooses. In addition, ample space has been provided to allow movement of persons with disabilities. …… "The integrity and holiness of the ritual of penance demands an honored place reserved for it alone." Markita Mauck RECONCILIATION CHAPEL Wake Blessed Sacrament Chapel

20. 20. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 20 Nave - Seating SEATING When we sit down for dinner in our homes, we gather around the meal table. Gathering around the Table of the Word and the Table of the Eucharist provides the parish of St. Mark a sense of belonging as a worshipping community where everyone will share the Meal. The strong axis created by the radial seating radiating out from the Altar reinforces the “Gathering around the Table of the Lord”.
21. 21. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 21 Nave – Baptismal Font As one continues the journey from the Liturgical Narthex by making a right turn, the Nave welcomes the faithful. As you enter, you encounter the Baptismal Font, one of the sacraments of Initiation. This prominent location conveys the theology that “Through the waters of baptism” we are called to celebrate and re-live the Paschal Mystery brought about every week . BAPTISMAL FONT The font in a shape of the Womb brings about a “Birthing Experience” as each new member of the community is welcomed and embraced into the Parish of St. Mark. Baptism by immersion will convey the theology of dying and rising: “ and you were buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him.” (Col 2:12) It is located into the sacramental axis with the Table of the Eucharist and Blessed Sacrament Chapel. 25. 25. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 25 Devotional Spaces DEVOTIONAL SPACES Several devotional areas have been provided throughout the church in separate alcoves so that permanent statues or icons can be displayed. In addition, space have been designated as the shrine for an image that is being venerated on a given day or for a period of time, such as the image of a saint on his or her feast day or other requirements during the liturgical seasons. The religious art in these spaces should move you and should also invite your imagination to go beyond the literal part of the statue. It should take your mind and heart to think how to get closer to God. DEV . DEV . DEV . DEV . DEV . DEV .

27. 27. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 27 Nave – Clerestory The arrangement of the nave and aisles was also derived from the basilica. Although there are local instances in which the aisles rise to the height of the nave, all the great cathedrals inherited the higher nave elevation. The effects of the upper light thus obtained have much to do with the mystery and power of these buildings. The upper portion of the nave rising above the rest of the space and ambulatory is called the clerestory . In our church, this elevated area will allow for natural light to come into the space below.

32. 32. Church St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church…… United In One Spirit 32 Nave - Sanctuary The central focus of the liturgical action is provided in the midst of the assembly. It will be raised by three steps. This special space contains: The Altar on which the Eucharistic Sacrifice is offered as the Eucharist is the “source and summit” of our life of faith and worship. The Ambo from which God's Word is proclaimed. The Chair for the Priest , signifies his office of presiding over the gathering and of directing the prayers. A rear curved wall helps embrace this space as well as provide a visual backdrop for the Sanctuary. Access to the Sanctuary is also provided by a gentle sloping surface that invites members of the parish with disabilities to participate in the liturgical action as readers, deacons, etc. Baptismal Font Nave Sanctuary Liturgical Narthex Narthex Daily Chapel
