Disadvantages of outsourcing to India: Licensing and copyright issues. Outsourced projects may be copied and sold again to one of your competitors. This leads to serious issues with regards to licensing and copyright.Time lost managing project. Any financial gain must be weighed against the time spent having to manage the project from half way across the world. Communicating to the client and then having to translate requirements to the Indian programmers and back and forth. Paying for airfares, accommodation, visas, etc need to be factored in.Poorer standard of work resulting from poor communication and cultural differences. Financial losses that result from competitor's having better systems.Political instability - It is a fact that India is not as politically stable as Australia. Assassinations can lead to street unrest that can shut businesses down for days.Lack of quality control. Outsourcing a project requires a great deal of trust because the quality of programming varies considerably. Most problems do not surface till later on, and unless a project is written well, it is expensive to fix. Patch after patch is applied to dodgy programming.Customer service. Pushy sales people are always a sign that something is not quite right. If in presales, Indian developers call and email persistently, refuse to accept 'no' for an answer and continue to speak about how great their company and developers are, then what happens in the middle of a project, when something needs to be fixed, will they listen then? Establishing a relationship, is more than - 'we can get you a better price' - it is about working together to achieve a common goal and this means being able to listen and provide thoughtful answers, not just sales rhetoric.Risks to confidential data and personal data. The world may becoming a global village but laws that protect privacy and personal information are locally based. Once you outsource your data, you have very little control about what happens to that data. http://www.sqlsummit.com/Trends/Terrorism.htm Increasing long term costs. According to Forbes magazine's article "The Coming Death of Indian Outsourcing" India's cost advantage, which is currently 1:3 in 2007 will disappear by 2015, because of Indian wages are rising at a rate of 15% a year.Companies that choose to outsource to India, need to budget for long term increased costs, and provision for time to manage the project as well as budget for the risks of outsourcing.

A Japanese company and an American company decided to have a canoe race on the Tennessee River. Both teams practiced long and hard to reach their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile.

The Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A management team made up of senior management was formed to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people rowing and 1 person steering, while the American team had 8 people steering and 1 person rowing.

Feeling a deeper study was in order, American management hired a consulting company and paid them a large amount of money for a second opinion.

They advised, of course, that too many people were steering the boat, while not enough people were rowing.

Not sure how to utilize that information, but wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4 steering supervisors, 3 area steering superintendents, and 1 assistant superintendent steering manager. They also implemented a new performance system that would give the 1 person rowing the boat greater incentive to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First Program,' with meetings, dinners, and free pens for the rower. There was discussion of getting new paddles, canoes, and other equipment, extra vacation days for practices and bonuses.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Humiliated, the American management laid off the rower for poor performance, halted development of a new canoe, sold the paddles, and canceled all capital investments for new equipment. The money saved was distributed to the Senior Executives as bonuses and the next year's racing team was outsourced to India.

Sadly, The End.

Identifying outsourcing talent and capabilities.
Finding the right talent for the job...

Review the job descriptions other people have used to hire someone to get ideas for your own job template.

Create a thorough description of the role: the time required, the hours of the day work is to be done, communication methods, skills and experience necessary, technology used, etc. Be as specific and detailed as you can to get rid of the bad outsourcers.

Submit the job to one or several outsourcing sites. Include a keyword or phrase within each job post that applicants must include in their application. This confirms they actually read the job details and helps filter away people who are not taking your position seriously.

Try out several people at once on a test job. Make sure it’s something they would do regularly when hiring them and take the best one.

Outsourcing Competencies

• Differences between managing vendors and employee teams • Using the RFP process to define the work and select vendors • Understanding how to engage and use outsourced services • Negotiating terms and conditions, briefing vendor, kicking off project • Contracts and agreements; copyright and intellectual property
Negotiating is essential We learned that it is best to start with small tasks where you negotiate a small rate. In many cases, outsourced talent wants to become a “long-term” partner. For example, if their hourly rate is: $11 per hour. Offer $5 initially if they want the job. Don’t be afraid to offer small and explain that you have many other bids.
• Global vendor management, remote teams, multi-sourcing • Defining job scope, deliverables, service levels and standards • Capturing and retaining project knowledge and lessons learned • How partnering can dramatically increase effectiveness • What is required to communicate effectively with vendors • Managing problems that arise, collaboration and conflict • Assessing project results and managing vendor performance • Managing changes to work, project direction, or expected deliverables • Closing out projects, terminating a vendor, transitioning to new vendor Additional Outsourcing Competencies
