Editor's Notes
-Welcome to (the internet course) USING the INTERNET for TEACHING, LEARNING, & PRACTICAL APPLICATION. A series of downloadable PowerPoints that can viewed asynchronously. My name is dave fontaine. I am a NBCT and am currently working as an Internet Librarian and Information Specialist. I have been involved in education for more than 15 years. Besides my present position, I have also taught at: Drew University, Hamilton College, Nichols College, Johns Hopkins University, CCRI, and am currently working as an adjunct professor for URI’s Graduate School of Education, teaching the NBC preparation course. And, lastly, I am also available to present to different school systems as a Professional Development trainer. (But enough about me) Some of things we will be learning in this series may be familiar to some of you. In my experience, teachers, throughout all grades, have skill levels that cross the spectrum. Hopefully, through collaboration, we can add more together. Much of what we will do will entail sharing and responding to each other. The Internet is ( a metamorphosing entity )- ever changing and w/o constants. Therefore, our syllabus may be updated, modified, or tweaked at any moment. This course will span 13 weeks. There will be 1 session per week. Students are expected to keep up with the course material and deliverable assignments. We are all peers. I will treat you with professionalism and respect, and it is expected that you will reciprocate. Sometimes human nature has us treat an online course with less discipline. Maybe it’s because you may do all your assignments in your pajamas, or maybe because of its asynchronicity, it allows you more flexibility to procrastinate. I would like to say this only once-Please do not treat this course lightly. Your assignments will be posted online and shared for all to see, and for all your hard work you will be receiving 3 graduate credits in education. As you work through these sessions, please feel free to post any questions. Chances are that someone else may have the same issue. In the same spirit of collaboration I will be showing you the comments, reflections, and insights of previous participants of this course. The thinking behind this is a little ‘outside the box’ , but my motivation for this is to help you benefit from the collective knowledge of those that have come before us. This is the same philosophy behind the wiki and social software movement spreading across the Internet like wildfire. You will hear me talk in more detail about these things later this semester, so don’t worry if they sound new to you. Again, remember that each one of these sessions is protected by a Creative Commons license. This allows you to download, save, modify, and use any and all of the slides from this course. Commercial uses are prohibited however. In addition to this, I have transcribed all of the narration from these slides. You will find them in the notes’ section of each slide, so if you ever want to remove my voice and record your own version (although with the dulcet tones of yours truly I don’t see why you would) then you could do that easily enough. My email address is davefontaine1@gmail.com Thank you, and I hope to learn as much from you during this course as I can impart.
