Political And Economic Causes

  1. 1. Political and Economic Causes of War Daniel Ron
  2. 2. Attacking American Boats • France abducted American boats trading with Britain • Britain abducted twice as many boats as France did
  3. 3. Great Britain on The Seas • Britain would stop American trade boats and abduct them • They would also search the boats for deserters of the British Navy • Britain would impress (make a person unwillingly serve in the army or navy) the runaways • Occasionally, American sailors would be mistaken for British deserters
  4. 4. Jefferson and the Embargo Acts • Jefferson created the Embargo Acts in response to abduction of American boats • Meant would not trade with any other foreign nation • Acts did little to affect Britain or France • Were repealed in 1809
  5. 5. Non-Intercourse Acts • After long negotiation, Madison created the Non-Intercourse Act • This act meant trade was not permitted with Britain, but trade was legal with France • Angered Federalists
  6. 6. A Second War with Britain • Britain did not fully remove itself after first war of independence • A second war was bound to break out • Many reasons supported American attack on Britain
  7. 7. Reasons For War • Farmers wanted to expand west for more land • Britain was supplying Native Americans with weapons to keep Americans from expanding • Also and excuse to invade Spanish Florida (a British alliance) and Canada (owned by Britain at the time)
  8. 8. Reasons Against War • Federalists opposed war • Britain was their source of trade • A war meant money would not be made • Because Madison was Republican, he did as the farmers requested (Farmers were main support group of Republicans)
