  2. 2. Chemical Bond <ul><li>Types: Ionic, Covalent, and Metallic bonds </li></ul><ul><li>Holds two different atoms together to form a chemical substance. </li></ul><ul><li>Opposites attract so the formation is between a positively charged ion and a negatively charged ion. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Ionic Bonds <ul><li>Formed between a metal(cation) and a non metal(anion). </li></ul><ul><li>Form of non-covalent bonding. </li></ul><ul><li>Ex. Na + Cl -> Na+ + Cl− -> NaCl </li></ul><ul><li>Forms when the Cation ionization energy is low and gives some of its electrons to get a stable electron configuration. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Ionic Bonds: Electrical Conductivity <ul><li>When the ionic bond is a solid it can’t conduct electricity because the electrons are compact. </li></ul><ul><li>But if molted or dissolved, electricity can be conducted because the electrons move more freely. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Covalent Bond <ul><li>The sharing of pairs of electrons between atoms; strong bonds. </li></ul><ul><li>Covalent compounds have a lower melting and boiling points than ionic compunds. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Covalent bond con. Types: <ul><li>Polar covalent bond: a bond between two non-metals with different electronegativities. The higher the difference in electronegativity, the more polar the bond is. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Con. <ul><li>Nonpolar Covalent Bond: A bond with two non-metals with the same electronegativity. </li></ul><ul><li>Because they are sharing the electrons there is no charge separation. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Metallic Bond <ul><li>Bonding between atoms in metals; formed when free electrons(valence) and fixed, positively charged metallic atoms are attracted together. </li></ul>
