ROBOTIC COMPETITION SPONSORSHIP AN INITIATIVE BY NATIONAL LIBRARY BOARD As part of the digital readiness efforts by makerspaces@libraries, NLB is looking for candidates who are keen to be partially sponsored to train and enter an upcoming robotics competition. This deck contains more information on the competition and sponsorship available.

MAKEX 2019: MBOT ROBOTICS COMPETITION In 2019 season, MakeX will hold Regional Robotics Competition in more than 30 countries and regions around the world and will launch MakeX competition courses and organise various competition activities worldwide, spreading STEAM education among youths. Qualified teams can enter into 2019 MakeX World Championship and compete for the 2019 MakeX World Champion. The theme for 2019 MakeX competition is City Lights, which challenges young people to solve real-world problems we may face in everyday situations - including environmental pollution, food safety, recycling, viral infection and more, by applying STEAM concepts.

MakeX spirit is the cultural cornerstone of MakeX Robotics Competition, which inspires young people to acquire new skills, improve teamwork, gain memorable experiences in the competition, share their insights and knowledge with their community so as to achieve their grand aspiration of changing the world and shaping the future! Explore new ideas and new skills, use creativity and innovative thinking to overcome real-world challenges. Have open communication with partners, work together towards a common goal and complete a task in the most efficient way for win-win development! Enjoy the fun and excitement in head-to- head competition and problem-solving processes. Have an open mind as a “Maker”, share the joy, insights and experience with others.

THEMES The theme for 2019 MakeX competition is City Lights, which challenges young people to solve real- world problems we may face in everyday situations - including environmental pollution, food safety, recycling, viral infection and more, by applying STEAM concepts. The Competition will be divided into 4 programs based on different difficulty levels and targeting at various age groups. Teams design, build and program robots to compete different themed missions along their journey, and develop innovative thinking, team-building and problem-solving skills in the learning process. Let's break through the environmental crisis and protect our city!
  6. 6. MAKEX STARTER: CITY GUARDIAN The theme for MakeX Starter is “City Guardian”, a multi-tasking competition for young people between the ages of 7 to 16 years old. It will be split into two categories: • Primary Category – for ages 7 to 12 years old • Secondary Category – for ages 13 to 16 years old A maximum of 2 participants per team is required. Each team will have 1 mentor assigned. Lunch bento will be provided during the competition days. City Guardian tests the contestants’ in three ways: • To improve logical thinking by graphical programming • Learn more collaborative strategy by working with their alliance • Develop problem solving skills through the implementation of electronic parts, mechanical structure and software programming

Empowering Participation In support of those less able to participate in this competition on their own, NLB & Polaris would like to offer to cover the following for up to 15 teams (of 2 pax ea, ie 30 eligible participants): • Sponsored training & registration fees • Free practice venue • Free loan of Mbot for practice & competition use PIXEL Labs

NLB SUPPORTED PARTICIPATION Training Sessions • 6x Training sessions will be held at PIXEL Lab locations – • Jurong Regional Library or • Tampines Regional Library • Training Dates (Dates & timings TBC): Practice / Self Learning Supported participants of this programme are welcome to use the MakeX material at PIXEL Lab spaces and NLB learning resources for their own training and practice. August September Training sessions Saturdays 3rd, 17th, 24th, 31st + 1 more to announce Saturdays 7th Competition 13th & 14th
