Evaluation Q2
1. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary tasks?
By Daniel Winn
2. Main Product
Our main product is the music video that we have created called ‘Day ‘N Nite’ as
it is based on the song made by Kid Cudi. We created a theme based around the
lyrics in the song, for example we had shots in the day time and others at night
time which correlated well when trying to match lyrics to visuals.
Andrew Goodwin’s theory on the features of music videos says that he believes
that a music video can promote a song by the way it analyses the lyrics. Goodwin
says that there are three ways of promoting a song through the use of visuals;
illustrate; disjuncture; amplify. In our case we illustrate our music video visuals
to explain the lyrics of the song so the audience can understand more efficiently
about it.
One way that we do this is by understanding what is being said in the song then
try to create a shot that replicates what is being said. One example in our music
video of when we display this is when the lyrics ‘he slips into his white Nike's’
occurs we have a close up shot of an actor’s white Nike’s whilst walking down
the street. This is done so we can represent the relationship between the lyrics
and the visuals.
3. Ancillary tasks
I believe that our ancillary tasks (Website and CD booklet) reflect our
music video well and also reflect each other. The music video has clips
where it has a black and white effect which represents the colours of
the website and some of the CD booklet.
The CD booklet has more colour to it than just black and white
therefore is represented more by the clips with no effects. Although
with the CD booklet having a space type effect it could represent the
night scenes in our music video.
These tasks reflect more of our image than our music video does as the
image of our band is predominantly bland colours like white, grey and
black. The website and CD booklet both have some of these colours
therefore represent the band more than the music video does.
4. The effect they have?
I believe that the combination of our main product and ancillary tasks created a
stronger relationship between our image and productions. Our main product
displays numerous techniques of editing skills on Premiere Pro as well as good pre-
production qualities. Our ancillary tasks show that our band and organisation have
a specific theme to them, this theme is an old style theme as we use colours
which are associated with ‘olden times’ therefore we may come across as a
classic hip-hop group.
This gives a lot of information to our audience watching or looking at our ancillary
tasks, this effect that they have allows the audience to interpret their
perspective on us as a band. This kind of effect will also then give off our type of
music and impression to the audience, therefore some members of the audience
will be intrigued to follow the band for more content.
