A Study of Occupational Stress among
Female Teachers Working in
Secondary Schools in Trivandrum
Dhanya Lakshmi
University Of Kerala
Introduction
• Stress is defined as “An excess of the demand
made upon the adaptive capabilities of the
mind and body”.
• Occupational stress is an unpleasant
psycho-physical condition.
Objectives Of The Study
• To identify the main causes of occupational
stress among female secondary school
teachers.
• To find out the different stress management
activities for reducing the occupational stress
among the teachers.
Methodology
• Method - Survey Method
• Population - 4 secondary schools in
Trivandrum
• Sample - 30 female secondary school teachers
• Tools - Self-structured Questionnaire and
Interview

Major Findings
• The main causes of occupational stress as
responded by the female teachers are :-
• Large class size (77%)
• Problem in managing students' behavior (50%)
• Heavy workload ( 93.3 %)
• Lack of time to cover the syllabus (87%)
• Family interference into their career( 60%)
Major Findings
• The female teachers have also given their views
regarding different stress management activities
which are applied by them as follows :
• Sleeping ( 93.3 %)
• Talking with friends /family (100%)
• Listening to Music (40%)
• Watching TV (83%)
• Traveling to places of natural beauty ((80%)
Conclusion And Suggestion
• Organizing get- together programmes creating an
organizational climate in order to boost up the
interaction among the teachers and authorities.
• Student teacher ratio restricted to 1:40
• Counseling and stress management programmes
• Family support
• Modify the structure of syllabus

  • 7. Major Findings • The main causes of occupational stress as responded by the female teachers are :- • Large class size (77%) • Problem in managing students' behavior (50%) • Heavy workload ( 93.3 %) • Lack of time to cover the syllabus (87%) • Family interference into their career( 60%)

Major Findings • The female teachers have also given their views regarding different stress management activities which are applied by them as follows : • Sleeping ( 93.3 %) • Talking with friends /family (100%) • Listening to Music (40%) • Watching TV (83%) • Traveling to places of natural beauty ((80%)

Conclusion And Suggestion • Organizing get- together programmes creating an organizational climate in order to boost up the interaction among the teachers and authorities. • Student teacher ratio restricted to 1:40 • Counseling and stress management programmes • Family support • Modify the structure of syllabus
