Augmented Reality

 1. 1. Augmented Reality
 2. 2. Previously…

We saw the “Sixth Sense” Ted Talk

Object recognition and video overlay is Augmented Reality

 3. 3. History

In 1990, Tom Caudell coins the phrase Augmented Reality while at Boeing helping workers assemble cables into aircraft (Wikipedia)

 4. 4. Processing 1.0 Library Using your computer’s webcam Fiduciual Mark (the program searches the video stream for this symbol) The yellow wireframe box is a virtual object
 5. 5. Processing 1.0 Library Screen shots don’t do this justice – check out the videos for yourself. Moving the Fiducial Mark moves the 3D virtual object too!
 6. 6. Processing 1.0 Library Video overlay is also possible. Here the Fiducial Mark is completely replaced by video.
 7. 7. Human Face as a Fiducial Mark Here a Processing Library for Human Face Recognition is used to track the location of the face and overlay an image. This idea is taken from The Laughing Man character in Ghost in the Shell
 8. 8. Commercial Product
 9. 9. ARSights Download 3D Objects from the Google 3D Warehouse and view them in Augmented Reality. Note the Fiducial Mark
 10. 10. Show 3D Prototypes in Augmented Reality Screen shots don’t do this justice – check out the videos for yourself.
