IP Briefing 2009 Science

  1. 1. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT • SUBJECTS CURRENTLY OFFERED : Pure Biology – 80 places a) Pure Chemistry – 40 places b) Pure Physics – 40 places c) Sci (Chemistry / Physics) – 3E2 to 3E6, d) 3A1, 3A2, 3A3 e) Sci (NT) – 3T1
  2. 2. What to expect of : a) Pure Sciences : • In depth study of each science • 5 periods per week • Article reviews and research projects • Science Practical Assessment (SPA) b) Sci (Chem/Phy) • Study of 2 sciences combined as 1 mark • Content not as heavy as pure sciences • 4 periods per week
  3. 3. What to expect of : c) Sci (NT) : • Physics and Chemistry based topics • Study of optional topics related to petroleum products etc • 6-8 periods a week
  4. 4. Criteria Pure Sciences • Consistent B3 and above (65% and above) for sec 2 science overall (minimum) • Overall percentage of 65% and above • Keen interest in the science subject • Have the determination and self discipline for consistent revision.
  5. 5. Relevance to Further Education a) Junior Colleges • Better adaptability to the Sciences at ‘A’ level if take pure sciences at ‘O’ levels. • Taking of sci(phy/chem) will provide foundation for JC Science as well b) Polytechnics • Engineering courses require pupils to take Physics (pure or sci(phy) • Biotech or Biomedical courses require Chemistry (pure or sci(chem) & having Bio is advantage. • Sci(Phy/Chem) can meet the criteria for most courses.
  6. 6. Relevance to Further Education c) ITE • Physics based sciences is an advantage when taking mechanical and engineering based courses. • Physics and Chemistry based NT science will provide foundation if wish to take ‘O’ levels in future
  7. 7. GCE ‘O’ Level Science can be included as a subject in L1 R5 • L1 – EL/ Higher MT • R1 – Humanities/Higher Art/ Higher Music • R2 – Maths / Science • R3 – Humanities/Higher Art or Music/ Maths / Science • R4 – Any ‘O’ level subject • R5 – Any ‘O’ level subject
  8. 8. GCE ‘O’ Level Science can be included as a subject in L1 R4 • L1 – EL/ Higher MT • R1 – Humanities/ Higher Art or Music/ Maths / Science • R2 – Humanities/ Higher Art or Music/ Maths / Science
  9. 9. Please Note : • Find out from seniors about expectations of course • Investigate further on what courses / institutes you wish to go to • Decide based on your strengths and interest, and not your friends’ decision. • Use the choices wisely.
  10. 10. Polytechnic Courses Science is needed as a subject (R2 subject) for the following courses : a) Architecture Courses b) Science – based courses c) Technology courses -- the above are 3 out of 4 main schools of courses available in polytechnics.
  11. 11. ITE Courses Science is needed as a subject for courses related to Life Science / Information Technology Courses (R2 subject)
