The Assassination of Ferdinand started WWI Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because the Serbian terrorist Gavrilo Princip killed Archduke Francis Ferdinand.  This caused Russia to join in because they promised Serbia that they would back them up if there was war.  The Germans then declared war on Russia because they were the allies of Austria-Hungary.  Later other allies joined in.
