  4. 4. NSP Beats the Competition… Again We regularly compare our products COMPETITOR ECHINACEA LABEL CLAIMS with others in the industry to make 5 Claim sure we’re the best. Take a look at the following summaries to see how NSP products measure up. 4 Claim Claim Actual Echinacea Actual We looked at two Echinacea 3 products on the market. Competitor (mg) A did not meet label claims for two key active ingredients— 2 Actual echinacosides and cichloric acid. Competitor B did not meet label claims for echinacosides. Of the 1 products tested, only NSP Echinacea met label claims. Also, both competitor products appeared to contain dirt. 0 Echinacosides Cichoric Acid Echinacosides Competitor A Competitor B Kelp We tested NSP Kelp against 80000 two competing retail kelp products ANTIOXIDANT BEVERAGE COMPARISON using Thin Layer Chromatography. 70000 NSP Kelp had 2.5–6.5 times more naturally occurring iodine than the 60000 competitors’ products. And only 50000 NSP Kelp had the actives present in (ORAC) the right amounts. 40000 Thai-Go® 30000 We measured our Thai-Go 20000 antioxidant beverage against five antioxidant drinks sold by direct 10000 marketing companies, measuring 0 ORAC* levels. The ORAC level of A B C D E NSP NSP Thai-Go was almost double Thai-Go that of the nearest competitor. *Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity—a measure of antioxidant capability Co-Q10 We examined eight other Co-Q10 products. All of them met their label claims. But, NSP brand Co-Q10 was the only product that was crystal-free. The other products all contained crystals, and crystalline Co-Q10 is not bioavailable. The intestines simply can’t absorb the crystal form of Co-Q10, so much ofNature’s Sunshine Products, Inc. it is wasted upon consumption. 5. 5. Nature’s Sunshine stands above the fray. We are committed to excellence in providing ourcustomers with the purest, safest products available. Our vendors repeatedly tell us thatwe have the highest quality specs in the industry. We also have the advanced analyticalequipment necessary to verify our product purity, potency and safety. And these things willnever change. That’s why YOU can always be confident about NSP quality. The Dark Side of the Industry In Dec. 2011, an article in Forbes magazine exposed a highly contaminated New Jersey manufacturing facility that made protein powders and other dietary supplements. An FDA inspection nearly three years prior found both living and dead rodents and excreta, plus cross contamination with milk, a major food allergen, which did not appear on product labels. The FDA shut down this facility to correct these issues. But the owners opened up shop in another state almost immediately. They were then charged with contempt for violating the decree to halt business operations. The company was fined $1 million, and three top executives went to prison. While this is on the far end of the quality spectrum, the fact that anyone was attempting to package and sell health supplements for human consumption in such conditions is deplorable. Separately, in December 2010, an FDA news release reported that inspectors found 300 fraudulent (spiked) products on the market. These allegedly Nature’s Sunshine Products, Inc. natural products were spiked with drugs—including antibiotics (Cipro®) and Order Sales 1-800-453-1422 weight-loss meds (Sibutramine®). Our industry must constantly defend its www.naturessunshine.com reputation, because of this type of behavior. July 2012, Sunshine Horizons 3
  6. 6. Digestive Deliverance by Darlyn Britt T his month we shine a spotlight on Digestive Health. Each of us can take simple steps to improve digestion. Start by eating more unprocessed foods like fresh vegetables and fruits, which contain enzymes that help the body break down foods. Efficient, healthy digestion makes every day better. NSP supplements can help the whole digestive process run more smoothly. Food Enzymes—First, Break it Down Enzymes kick-start important chemical reactions in the body. Specific enzymes help break down different types of foods—proteins, carbohydrates and fats—into usable forms. Our bodies produce some digestive enzymes, but production slows down with age, often leading to digestive challenges. Adding key enzymes to the diet boosts digestive efficiency and makes nutrients more available to the body. NSP Food Enzymes contains enzymes to promote maximum digestion, including pepsin (breaks down meat and other proteins), pancreatin (breaks down proteins, carbohydrates and fats), mycozyme (starches), papain (proteins), bromelain (protein) and bile salts (emulsifies fats). Stomach Comfort—Soothing Help for Tummy Trouble Get natural help for occasional stomach upset. Stomach Comfort includes calcium carbonate to help neutralize acid, soothing algin to protect the esophagus, slippery elm bark to soothe the digestive tract, plus ginger, papaya and licorice to support proper digestion. Chew 1 or 2 tablets for quick, temporary relief of occasional stomach upset or sourness. Gastro Health—Support for Your Stomach’s Interior Walls NSP scientists worked for two years, testing the capacity of various herbs to create an unfriendly environment for H. pylori. The result? Gastro Health, a powerful weapon in the fight for the lining of the stomach. Gastro Health contains extracts of licorice root, pau d’arco bark, clove flower, Indian elecampane root and capsicum fruit. CleanStart®—Get the Gunk Out One of our most powerful and popular cleansing products, CleanStart is a 14-day program of drinks and capsules that round up toxins and waste and help the body remove them. It Think Fresh! Refined foods contain little or no enzymes. Eating raw or fresh foods that contain enzymes supports digestion.Nature’s Sunshine Products, Inc. 8. 8. 40th Anniversary Spotlight: Leona and Eugene Reams By Courtney Hammond As one of Nature’s Sunshine’s earliest members, Leona Reams joined the company nearly 40 years ago after Marjorie Ward introduced her to NSP. At the time, Leona had a number of health issues, and she immediately saw the value and opportunity in being involved with the company. She owned a health food store in South Gate, Calif., and shortly after signing up, she discovered that Nature’s Sunshine products were taking over her store.6 Sunshine Horizons, July 2012
  9. 9. From that storefront, she conducted consultations and providednutritional counseling until she and her husband moved to Kansasin 1999. Now she runs her business from her store in Kansas, butshe still visits California where many of her clients and customers Leona Reamsare based. In fact, when she and Eugene go to California, theyoften hold meetings at an IHOP restaurant in South Gate. Leona married her husband, Eugene, 23 years ago. He worksalongside Leona in their store. Leona says that Eugene is anexcellent naturopath and great at muscle testing. “He went toschool for so long,” she says, “longer than a medical doctor. For atime he also worked in special health clinics in Mexico. He knowshis stuff and really makes a great difference in everyone’s health, including mine,” she says. “He also teaches people how to testthemselves.” Leona has also been able to share Nature’s Sunshine Leona withwith her two children and her parents, well into their 90s. her mother, It was the products that drew Leona to Nature’s Sunshine. She Mae Trusterhas long suffered from several unusual health problems. She issensitive to both chemicals and electro-magnetic fields, making itdifficult for her to use electronic devices. She is also very sensitiveto radiation. Over the years she has built up quite a list of NSPproducts that she uses daily to help her build her immuneand nervous systems, including Immune Stimulator, ChineseNervous Fatigue, HY-C, Thyroid Activator, Adrenal Support,Thai-Go, Nature’s Noni, Cranberry Buchu, and CardioAssurance. And, she can’t live without Rose Essential Oil,which she may use several times a day. Building her healthhas allowed Leona to do the things she loves, like playingthe piano. She has been her church’s pianist for the past 12years! Leona says that the biggest change over the years she hasbeen with Nature’s Sunshine is the number of products. “At the Above: NSP’s firstbeginning, we had a one-page list of products. Now there managersare hundreds. It’s been a good change.” Some of her biggestsellers have been a few of the newer products, including Silver At right: Enrique andShield and Super ORAC. Carmen Amescua, close Leona appreciates having a rewarding business that has friends and fellow NSP managersallowed her to help people, plus earn perks along the way. “It’snice to have a new car all of the time,” says Leona, referring to Below: Leona’s first NSPher NSP car allowance. Leona has also been able to travel with car, a Satellite Sebringthe company. She has been to most NSP conventions, missing justa few here and there. She was part of the first TAC trip to Hawaiiand has especially enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and Mexico. “It’sbeen a wonderful experience going to conventions where I’vebeen able to meet so many nice people. And then when I goback, I get to see everyone again. Also I always enjoy visitingwith Gene and Kristine Hughes.“ “I give God the credit for all that has happened to me throughNSP. Nature’s Sunshine has been a wonderful way of life,” Leonasays. “It is so rewarding to see people get results. The programswork. NSP has made all the difference in my life and my health.” July 2012, Sunshine Horizons 7
  10. 10. A Natural Approach to by Dr. William J. Keller with Darlyn Britt Dr. William J. Keller, NSP Vice President of Health Sciences and Chief Scientific Resource Officer, shared valuable information about pain management through natural means at our National Convention in Hawaii in March. Below are some highlights from his presentation. U nderstanding how pain is perceived helps us realize the options we have in addressing it. Since pain is something many of us deal with right now and most of us will face in the future, a discussion of this topic seems worthwhile. Pain in an unpleasant sensation that leads us to withdraw from a damaging situation. Pain signals are modulated by neurochemicals. Three of the most common include prostaglandin E2, Substance P and glutamate. • rostaglandin E2 sensitizes pain receptors as well as causing P inflammation and edema. • ubstance P is a peptide that functions in pain impulse transmission. S • lutamate is an excitatory neurotransmitter that, among other things, G lowers the pain threshold. All of these are present in the body and function as a normal part of nervous system health. Higher levels of these neurochemicals typically translate to pain. If we can work to lower these levels, we can subsequently lower pain perception. Three types of pain exist: acute, chronic and neuropathic. Acute pain stems from tissue injury and is generally short-term. Most people experience acute pain after a fall or some type of accident. Chronic pain is usually long-term, may be due to a serious disease, and has a visceral origin (emanating from the chest or gut rather than the periphery). Neuropathic pain involves nerve damage and is perceived as burning, tingling or lancinating (piercing) pain. Fibromyalgia, diabetes and shingles all are typically associated with neuropathic pain. Oxidative stress, inflammation and pain—the “three amigos of ill health”—always appear together. Fortunately, certain natural ingredients (listed below) address all three of these “amigos.” That is, these ingredients help reduce oxidative stress, combat inflammation and help reduce mild pain that accompanies inflammation.8 Sunshine Horizons, July 2012
  11. 11. Pain Management Free radicals (also called oxidants or reactive Herbal Ingredients that Interfere with chemical species) cause Both Arms of the Inflammation Cascade inflammation through cell and tissue damage. Free Phospholipid radical damage elevates (from cell membrane) levels of arachidonic acid, Phospholipase A2 the biochemical precursor Andrographis Boswellia to prostaglandins and Arachidonic Acid Turmeric leukotrienes, which in turn cause joint discomfort 5-Lipoxygenase Cyclooxygenase and muscle soreness. (5-LOX) (COX) Abundant free radicals Mangosteen pericarp Turmeric also activate NF- (nuclear Boswellia Willow bark factor) kappa-beta, and Turmeric Hops cone this leads to inflammation Leukotrienes Prostaglandins and soreness because of enhanced production of cyclo-oxygenase (COX) Certain herbs interfere with and related enzymes. COX is an enzyme responsible enzymes in both arms of the for the formation of various arachidonic acid inflammatory prostaglandins. Therefore, blocking the production of cascade. COX leads to lower levels of pain. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, thereby halting their damaging effects. Some of the best natural antioxidants for pain include turmeric root, mangosteen pericarp and rutin. All of these donate extra electrons to the unstable chemical species to help avoid free-radical-induced tissue damage and the activation of NF-kappa-beta. Certain herbs also have been shown to interfere with enzymes in both arms of the arachidonic acid inflammatory cascade. Andrographis, boswellia and turmeric interfere with NF-kappa-beta. Boswellia and turmeric also interfere with 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), thus blocking leukotriene production. Mangosteen, turmeric and willow bark have a direct effect on COX, which blocks the production of prostaglandins. Reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene levels results in less pain and inflammation. Alpha acids from hops cone extract (Humulus lupulus) effectively relieve joint inflammation and pain because they exert a powerful antioxidant action and inhibit both NF-kappa-beta and COX as well as having a minor effect on 5-LOX. Proteases (protein-digesting enzymes) interfere with the inflammatory cascade that leads to pain. They help provide relief from inflammation and soreness in muscles due to strenuous physical activity. Proteases promote a more rapid recovery and healing process. This is great news for anyone who tends to overdo exercise or chores and then feels the pain and stiffness a day or two later. We are so fortunate that Mother Nature has provided us with many natural ingredients, or gifts, that effectively support pain management. July 2012, Sunshine Horizons 9

  19. 19. Success with Sunshine Rewardsby Delia Ortiz, Area Manager, Fla.with John Baker After it was introduced at our National Convention in March, in Hawaii, I signed up for “Sunshine Rewards,” which helps me get free product and free shipping every month. I was so excited about this program that I immediately started sharing it and signed up all of my successline members and clients. I had many sign- ups in March and in April! I tell everyone to sign up for Sunshine Rewards. I do consultations, and I have people sign up for Sunshine Rewards so they can receive their products without paying shipping charges, and they get points for free products over time. I have more people stay on their health programs because they are on Sunshine Rewards. When I called a few months ago, the rep told me that I had 83 points and asked if I wanted to use them. “Of course!” I told him.* I was very happy to get free products with Sunshine Rewards. I love the company’s integrity. They do what they set out to do. Thanks to SR, my monthly check went up nearly $500 the first month, and it continues to grow. In March, I broke out six new managers, and in April I broke out two more! And they are still solid. Before I was always worried about managers dropping. But I’m not worried any more. In May I became an Area Manager, and at this pace, soon I will reach Regional Manager! I go out with my Managers and members to visit their clients, and I show them how to sign people up for Sunshine Rewards. People love natural products, and they love receiving free products and free shipping every month! I am excited to help people, to teach them how to improve their health and their income. I enjoy seeing their success—and mine—with Sunshine Rewards! *When changing your SR order, be sure you have 100 QV to qualify. Free product has no QV. July 2012 Manager Insert
