CA I – shakespeare Paraphrasing
cards look like this
Paraphrasing is the next step Paraphrase – taking someone else’s material and putting it into your own words, but still crediting the original source. What happens if we don’t give credit to the source?
plagiarism the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work. CONSEQUENCES Covered on pages 11-12 of your student handbook. "Plagiarism | Define Plagiarism at Dictionary.com." Dictionary.com | Find the Meanings and Definitions of Words at Dictionary.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Jan. 2011. <http://dictionary.reference.com/browse
Steps to paraphrase Read passage carefully and more than once. Out loud can be helpful too. Without looking at the passage, write down what you think it said. Check to make sure you didn’t repeat unique or key terms. Should be about the same length. No quotations. COMPLETE SENTENCES!!
practice Effect on Teens Quote: “She uses the site to keep up with school and social activities, both on computers and through her phone. After having surgery on her ankle last December, she was homebound and used her cell and Facebook to communicate with teachers and friends who helped her keep up with schoolwork, Sweeney said.” Paraphrase: Sweeney uses her cell phone and computer to check Facebook to stay up-to-date with school. After ankle surgery, when she was stuck at home she talked to friends and teachers through Facebook to get help (Shalash). Citation: Shalash, Samieh. "Staying Plugged 24/7 Is Part of High School Experience." McClatchy - Tribune Business News. 13 Dec 2010: n.p. SIRS Researcher. Web. 28 Feb 2011.

After having surgery on her ankle last December, she was homebound and used her cell and Facebook to communicate with teachers and friends who helped her keep up with schoolwork, Sweeney said.” Paraphrase: Cell phones and computers provide access to Facebook for Sweeney, who wasn’t able to attend school for a while. She used it to stay in touch with teachers and classmates. (Shalash). Citation: Shalash, Samieh. "Staying Plugged 24/7 Is Part of High School Experience." Your turn Positive Uses Quote: “Police and administrators actually benefit from the fast-paced spread of information that Facebook allows, said Ernest Williams, a Phoebus High school resource officer. He's friends with about 35 students on Facebook and said it's a great way to receive tips on planned fights, see proof of bullying and watch videos of incidents that occur at school.” Citation: Shalash, Samieh. "Staying Plugged 24/7 Is Part of High School Experience." McClatchy - Tribune Business News. 13 Dec 2010: n.p. SIRS Researcher. Web. 28 Feb 2011.
