Storage Devices

 1. 1. O
ptical storage devices
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

With proper care, optical media can last a long time.
 2. 2. When data is written to them, they cannot be reused. This is excellent for archiving because data is preserved permanently of being overwritten.
 3. 3. Optical media are widely used on other platforms, including the PC.
 4. 4. Optical media provide the capability to pinpoint a particular piece of data stored on it, independent of the other data on the volume .
 5. 5. The write-once read-many (WORM) ,it excellent for archiving, but it also prevents you from being able to use that media again.
 6. 6. The server uses software compression to write compressed data to your optical media. It need the long time to stroe more datas.

Mai 10RP
7. 7. CD-Rom
Typical size = 650mb
Advantages :

Data cannot Be erased – you cannot lose your data
 8. 8. Easy to carry around
 9. 9. Cheap to produce
 10. 10. Can Be read By a DVD drive

Disadvantages :

Fragile
 11. 11. Can scratch easily – this effects the data when the laser reads it
 12. 12. Slower to access than a hard drive

Mai 10RP
13. 13. DVD-ROM
Read Only Memory (Read Only)
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

Can only be used for reading.
 14. 14. Movies you buy or rent are usually DVD-ROM.
 15. 15. Although some discs can hold up to 17 GB of information.
 16. 16. Can hold a minimum of 4.7 GB of movies, music, text, or images.
 17. 17. Access rates for DVD ROMs range from 600 Kbps to 1.3 Mbps.
 18. 18. Once the information is recorded onto a DVD ROM, it can’t be changed or altered.
 19. 19. You may have trouble operating some programs with your DVD ROM drive.

Mai 10RP
20. 20. CD R/DVD R
Recordable (Only write one time)
DVD recordable
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

Can only be written with -R type drives.
 21. 21. Can be read with -R or +R type drives.
 22. 22. DVD+R
 23. 23. 2 hours of video in SP mode or 4 hours in EP mode
 24. 24. Can only be written with +R type drives.
 25. 25. Can be read with -R or +R type drives.
 26. 26. Data on a DVD-R cannot be changed

Mai 10RP
27. 27. CDRW/DVDRW
DVD-rewritable
Compact Disc Re-Writable
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

The data burned on a CD-RW cannot be changed
 28. 28. you have to completely erase a CD-RW every time you want to change the files or add new data
 29. 29. they don't store data reliably for as long as CD-Rs do.
 30. 30. A CD-RW can be written to multiple times.
 31. 31. CD-RWs a good choice for making frequent backups.

Mai 10RP
32. 32. DVD RAM
DVD- Random Access Memory
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

Long life— without physical damage
 33. 33. Can be rewritten over 100,000 times
 34. 34. Disc defect management designed to safeguard data.
 35. 35. DVD-burning software may not be required
 36. 36. Less compatibility than DVD+RW and DVD-RW
 37. 37. 12x media is not reportedly available in Europe.
 38. 38. DVD-RAM media have always been more expensive than other types of DVD.

Mai 10RP
39. 39. HD DVD
High-Definition/Density DVD
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

high-density optical disc format for storing data
 40. 40. HD DVD was envisaged to be the successor to the standard DVD format.
 41. 41. maximum capacity: 15 GB per layer
 42. 42. it’s hard to deny that the HD-DVD player is a great device for the price
 43. 43. It’s expensive

Mai 10RP
44. 44. Blu-ray
is an optical discstorage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format.
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

It’s main uses are for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 video games.
 45. 45. 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc
 46. 46. a standard DVD uses a 650 nanometer red laser, Blu-ray uses a shorter wavelength
 47. 47. six times more data storage than a DVD
 48. 48. It’s too expensive.
 49. 49. Blu-ray attempted to woo consumers with awfully big pockets by presenting them
 50. 50. Blu-ray disc can't hold much more than four or five hours of high definition content.

Mai 10RP
51. 51. Solid state backing storage
Disadvantages :
Advantages :

Smallest form of memory
 52. 52. More expensive than

other forms but can be easily written to and updated.

used as removable storage

More robust than other forms of storage.
Mai 10RP
53. 53. Memory sticks
Pen drives
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

It can be lost.
 54. 54. It can be broken, if we dropped.
 55. 55. It can lost the information easily.
 56. 56. Can store up to many Gb.
 57. 57. Used to transport files and backup

data from computer to computer.
Mai 10RP
58. 58. Flash memory
cards
Advantages :
Disadvantages :

Used in digital cameras, palmtops, mobile phones, MP3

players.
Mai 10RP

It can be lost and broken
