  2. 2. One type of cancer that a woman needs to be aware of isendometrial cancer. This type of cancer affects the liningof the uterus called endometrium. Because it is found inthe uterus this type of cancer is also called uterinecancer. Also this type of cancer is not as common asother cancers that are found in the female reproductivesystem. Even though it is not as common as those othertypes of cancer, it can be just as serious. If you are afemale, it is definitely worth becoming moreknowledgeable about it and its symptoms.Endometrial cancer develops when cells in the lining ofthe uterus become abnormal and start to grow rapidlyand in an uncontrolled manner. These abnormal cells willthen turn into a malignant tumor. Unlike many cancerswhere the cause is unknown, the cause of this type ofcancer is actually known. It is caused when an individualgets a hormonal imbalance with the level of estrogen inthe body being higher than the level of progesterone. This imbalance causes the lining of the uterus becomethicker and if it remains in this condition, abnormal cellsmay start to develop and grow.
  3. 3. Age is one factor that increases the risk of this type ofcancer. Normally it affects women who are over 50 yearsof age. In addition to age there are other factors that cancause an estrogen-progesterone hormonal imbalance. One risk is directed towards women that are overweightbecause they may have a higher level of estrogenbecause of the extra fat cells. The body cannotcompensate for this extra estrogen by creating moreprogesterone so an imbalance can occur. One thing that can increase the risk of endometrialcancer is if a woman gets hormonal therapy that involvestaking estrogen without progestin can also increase therisk. Polycystic ovary syndrome, which can affect women, may also lead to a hormonal imbalance. Some of thingsthat can increase ones risk factors are an earlymenstruation and late menopause. If a woman has neverbeen pregnant, had a full term pregnancy or breast fedare also at a higher risk of developing this disease.
  4. 4. Bleeding from the vagina after menopause is more thanlikely the most common symptom. You will also find thatwomen that are undergoing hormonal therapy may alsohave this kind of bleeding so bleeding does notnecessarily indicate cancer. However if you doexperience this type of bleeding, you should go to yourdoctor to get checked. The good news is that this condition can be corrected.Like most cancers, the early it is diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of success. This type of cancer isnormally diagnosed with biopsy where cells from theuterus lining are removed for lab testing. The endometrial cancer is normally treatment by surgerywhere the uterus as well as the cervix, fallopian tubesand the ovaries are removed. During this surgery thepelvic lymph nodes may also need to be removed to keepthe tumor from spreading there as well. It is likely thatafter surgery is complete, the patient will undergochemotherapy and radiation therapy. Hormone therapyis also used to prevent abnormal cells from growing.
