1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
My magazine uses several conventions that real media products use. For instance, my double page spread
uses a pull quote at the top of the page. This is a common technique used in the vast majority of magazines,
as it allows the magazine to quickly grab a readers attention, encouraging them to read onwards. It is normally
an exciting or interesting piece of writing. My magazine also writes in columns, especially on the double page
spread, which is very common of magazines. They do this as it seems less daunting to a reader then a wall of
text might do, which encourages them to read onwards, instead of scaring them off. One last common
convention that I used is a masthead on top of the front cover. This is a great way to advertise your magazine
to new potential customers, as it is generally a piece of the magazine always viable, and as it is positioned on
the front cover it is easy to see at a glance.
However, I did not stick entirely to conventions of pre-existing products. One example of this is a minimal
colour pallet, usually consisting of a maximum of three colours repeated throughout the magazine. My
magazine used at least four, as it commonly used Black, Red, Blue, White and occasionally grey. I did this on
purpose, for several reasons. One of these is that it can help to keep a potential customers entertained,
despite how simple it is; It is just more visually pleasing. Another reason I used it is because it allows for a
wide range of different colour combinations throughout the magazine, with different patterns.
