Cupcake Digital has made it a priority to provide apps in multiple languages starting with Spanish, translating text, narration, learning exercises and subtitled lyrics in the videos. The growing Hispanic market suggests a need for bilingual apps. This initiative was made very personal by Cupcake Digital executives Jennifer Powers and Carmen Hernandez’ desire to expose their young children to their native language in a more engaging format. This position paper provides an assessment of the need for bilingual apps and the educational value of Cupcake Digital’s Spanish language-enhanced story experiences.

Not only is Cupcake Digital’smission to create bilingual apps starting with Spanish personal, itis also a burgeoning market because of the growing population ofHispanics. The Hispanic population in the United States is growing rapidly:Hispanics represent the nation’s largest minority – 52 millionpeople constituting 16.7 percent of the total U.S.population; (U.S. Census)By 2050, the projected percentage of Hispanics is 30percent; (U.S. Census)24 percent of elementary and high school studentscombined were Hispanic in 2011;(Pewhispanic.org)It is an important initiative for the company to provide thesestorybook experiences for young children and parents who wanthigh-quality apps in Spanish. By giving parents this choice,Cupcake Digital meets several objectives: supporting the needs ofparents who want to experience the apps in their native tongue, providing a tool for bilingual parents who want their kids topractice Spanish, and giving children a way to practice some basiclanguage skills. The Spanish narration and individually highlightedwords in the app are designed specifically for teaching the basicsof spelling and vocabulary and could be used to practice thelanguage.

"In our increasingly global world, parents realizethat their kids will benefit from knowing more than onelanguage," said Nancy Rhodes, director of foreign-languageeducation at the Center for Applied Linguistics, in Washington,D.C. "Theres definitely been a grassroots push for more bilingualeducation in preschools."Children as young as two can naturally pick up language skills astheir brains develop. iPhone/iPod touch apps can help reinforcelanguage development with kid-friendly graphics and games thatintroduce colors, numbers, zoo animals, and more."Kids this age are developing language skills rapidly, and theyquickly absorb whatever they hear," said Erika Levy, Ph.D.,assistant professor of speech and language pathology at Columbia

"They can learn tounderstand new words in two different languages at an incrediblyfast rate. You dont need to enroll your child in formal languageclasses to hear her repeat words and songs in a new tongue -- justlisten in when shes watching television shows like Dora theExplorer, Go, Diego, Go! and Sesame Street, which teach basicSpanish words to the preschool set.”According to research published in the International Journal ofBilingualism, bilingual children tend to be more creative thinkersthan those who speak only one language. The ability to switchbetween two languages enables the development of other skillsthat boost other types of thinking, which include creative thinkingand problem solving.A study conducted by neuropsychologist Tamar Gollan of theUniversity of California, San Diego, found that brain functions ofbilinguals stay sharper as they age. The study even indicated thatthe more proficient one was in each language, the more resistantthey were to the onset of dementia and other symptoms ofAlzheimer’s.Bilingual apps are not only a beneficial aid for Spanish-speakingparents; they are great for children’s developing minds.“We’re committed to answering the call for Spanish-languageenhanced storybook experiences,” said Brad Powers, Chairman ofCupcake Digital. “There is currently very limited availability for the
