About the Participants: <ul><li>International interns or trainees: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>are pursuing degrees or have recently graduated from prestigious universities in the fields of: </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>management, business, commerce and finance </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>information media and communications </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>the sciences, engineering, architecture, mathematics, and industrial occupations </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>public administration and law </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>are eager and enthusiastic to develop their professional skills abroad and learn the American style of business </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>bring a global perspective and add an international element to your company </li></ul></ul>

Programs Offered : <ul><li>Interns or trainees may participate in either the J-1 Summer Work and Travel or J-1 Trainee/Intern program </li></ul><ul><li>The J-1 Summer Work and Travel program is a short term internship (up to 4 months) for university students on their summer break </li></ul><ul><li>The J-1 Trainee program is for participants who have already graduated and have 1 year of experience, or have 5 years of work experience </li></ul><ul><li>The Intern category of the J-1 Trainee visa is for university students who are still pursuing their degree (or are within one year of graduation) and would like to train for longer than their summer break (up to 12 months) </li></ul><ul><li>CulturaLinks USA matches international applicants with U.S. companies, facilitates the visa sponsorship process and supports the visa application in participants’ home countries </li></ul><ul><li>CulturaLinks USA will assist your company in tailoring an international internship program that supports your company’s objectives and matches the requirements of either J-1 exchange program </li></ul><ul><li>If you already have an international internship program in place, CulturaLinks USA can assist you with screening and recruiting qualified candidates for your company’s program </li></ul>

About the Host Company: <ul><li>Host companies: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>can have as few as 3 employees or can be multi-million dollar corporations with locations all over the world </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>must have been in business for at least one year </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>may host trainees or interns in various departments within the company </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>must be able to provide supervision to the interns or trainees throughout their programs </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>must be able to provide a small stipend or regular salary to J-1 program participants </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>do not have to pay any sponsorship or placement fees in order to host participants in the J-1 programs </li></ul></ul>

Facts: <ul><li>Approximately 27,000 students and young professionals come to the U.S. each year on the J-1 trainee visa for professional training and cultural exchange </li></ul><ul><li>Approximately 70,000 students come to the U.S. on the J-1 Summer Work and Travel visa </li></ul><ul><li>Both of these programs exist because of the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961, also known as the Fulbright-Hays Act (or, as simply the Act) </li></ul><ul><li>The purpose of the Act is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges </li></ul><ul><li>“… exchanges, especially those involving young people, are our most vital public diplomacy asset ( link ).” </li></ul><ul><li>For more information on the J-1 program, please visit the State Department’s website: </li></ul>

How It Works: <ul><li>If you are interested in hosting a trainee or intern, a representative from CulturaLinks USA will assist you in designing a program including the number of participants, length and frequency of the program, the departments that can host a participant, and the overall purpose of the program as related to your company’s goals </li></ul><ul><li>CulturaLinks USA will then screen candidates according to the specific needs of your company </li></ul><ul><ul><li>screening will include a personal interview, review of the applicants background including transcripts and letters of recommendation as well as evaluating the applicant to determine that their English language skills are sufficient to participate in your program </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Once your company has interviewed and chosen a candidate, CulturaLinks USA will assist you in designing a training plan and will facilitate the visa sponsorship for your applicant </li></ul><ul><li>CulturaLinks USA will also provide your company with a presentation on your prospective trainee or intern’s country of origin in order to help initiate the cultural exchange between you and your participant </li></ul>
