The labor movement in Chile has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. Unions formed to advocate for better working conditions and wages for workers. However, the labor movement faced repression from right-wing governments that overthrew socialist leader Salvador Allende in 1973 and established a military dictatorship led by Augusto Pinochet until 1990.
