Roman Forum in generalby Sara, Jason, and Martin• Usually the forum had stonepavement, and around the edges therewere fancy buildings, temples, andbasilicas, and sometimes stores(shops). In some cities the Forum hada platform in it that people couldstand on to make speeches. Thisplatform was called the Rostra.Thefirst forum was built byAugustus(Octavian). A roman forumis a rectangle surrounded by ruins ofseveral important ancient governmentbuildings at the center of the city ofRome .• At the center of most roman cities was a bigopen space called the forum. People metthere to do business to sell things and bythings, to see their friends,to find out aboutthe news, and even to go to school.
People first began meeting in this forumaround 500 BCE at the time of thefounding of the Roman Republic. Thesenate met in the brick building on thephotograph (actually this is a laterreplacement for an older building thatburnt down). Little by little, rich menadded temples and statues, triumphalarches, basilicas to the forum until by thetime of Julius Caesar, the forum wasvery crowded.
Julius Caesar built a new forum offto the side of the first one. This is theforum of Julius Caesar. It has atemple at one end, but you can’t seeit in theis picture. What you can seeis the doors of a lot of little shops ofthe businesses that were located inthe forum. It was paved in limestoneblocks and not as grassy as it is now.
