ANSHU GUPTA
Founder - Goonj, a pan India NGO
Anshu Gupta is an Indian social entrepreneur who founded Goonj, a pan India
non-governmental organisation (NGO) that positions the under-utilised urban
material as a development resource for the rural parts of India.Popularly known
as the "Clothing Man". He won the 2015 Ramon Magsaysay Award for "his
creative vision in transforming the culture of giving in India, his enterprising
leadership in treating cloth as a sustainable development resource for the poor,
and in reminding the world that true giving always respects and preserves
human dignity."
Early life
Born in Meerut, (Uttar Pradesh),Anshu Gupta spent his initial years in Chakrauta, Banbasa and Bariely, smaller
towns of Uttar Pradesh as his father got postings in his job with Indian Army’s Military Engineering Services
(MES). After finishing his college from Dehradun, he came to Delhi to do a double PG diploma in Journalism
and Advertising and Public Relations from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. He has also done an
MA in Economics.
Career
Starting as a freelance journalist, Anshu left a corporate job in 1998 and founded Goonj in 1999, with his wife
Meenakshi Gupta and a few friends, with a mission to make clothing a matter of concern and to bring it among
the list of subjects for the development sector. Anshu’s work with GOONJ goes to a core challenge of our
times; the growing gap between the urban prosperity & rural poverty. His work has a game changing element in
many ways; he has taken the menacing growth of urban waste and used it effectively and efficiently as a tool to
trigger large scale development work on diverse issues; roads, water, environment, education, health etc. in
some of the most backward and remote pockets of India. Not only is the so-called urban waste addressing
ignored basic needs it’s turning out to be a valuable asset for income generation. Bridging the massive gap of
social and economic inequities between urban and rural India in an innovative way, Anshu has created a new
dynamic focused on the receiver’s dignity rather than the donor’s pride. With Goonj, Anshu has made the
mostly passive urban and rural masses, prime stakeholders and actors in addressing their own needs, solving
their own problems. He has woven together a beautiful pipeline system for the channeling of resources to create
empowered and developed rural India.
Even though Anshu’s work has evolved as an organization, his core mission has been the idea spread. This
openness is a means and ends for his wide and multi audience partnership and engagement; in the cities, he and
his work speaks and engages stakeholders from all sections of the society; housewives, students, young
professionals, senior citizens, anybody who has something to give. Similarly in the villages; Goonj deals with
the diverse problems and issues of rural poverty by keeping its geographical spread and subjects to work on,
completely open, flexible and area specific.
Awards and Recognition
Anshu is an Ashoka and Schwab fellow and was conferred with ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award' by
Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in 2012,a fact which points not only towards the innovation &
wide replication potential of his ideas but also to his persuasive and powerful presentation of the work. Anshu
has been listed by the Forbes magazine as one of India’s most powerful rural entrepreneurs. His speech at
several TEDx events across India and other Indian and international forums like the World Islamic Economic
Forum, Jagrity Yatra, NASA, JICA (Japan) etc. is admired by experts across. Wide ranging media coverage of
Goonj’s work also highlights the dynamic personality of Anshu reflected in the culture of the organization.
Among many other honors, he has also been conferred with CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award.
