HEDIIP: Project to develop a new subject coding system for HE is launched
Subject coding is one of the key aspects of data and information in higher education.
The current system – JACS – was created in the late 1990s through the merger of
systems used by HESA and UCAS; the JACS system has its roots in the early 1970s.

Bolton has been awarded the contract to develop a new subject coding system for the
sector. In order to create a system that meets users’ needs the team will build a broad

The creation of HEDIIP is a huge opportunity to address some of the problems we
have with data and information. Coding structures that can be used by all data
collectors, and that provide the information we all need, are a key element of the
future we are working towards.”
