INFO 6800 Archives – January 14, 2013 Week Two – Arrangement ExerciseIntroductionThe purpose of this exercise is to provide an opportunity to experience some of thepractical challenges involved with organizing archival records in accordance with theprinciple of respect des fonds. Students will be given access to several small groups ofarchival records. Students form groups to review the records and makerecommendations about archival arrangement.Instructions 1) Form groups of 3-5 2) Rotate through each group of records, spending 10-15 minutes with each group 3) Sort though and evaluate the files in each box 4) Discuss the arrangement of the records with your group 5) You may wish to approach the task by asking a series of questions: a) Are the records of the same provenance? b) Is there a logical physical order to the records? Are they organized by form? By theme or subject? By function or purpose? c) Is there an obvious intellectual order to the records? Can you detect potential series and or sub-series? d) Does the organization of the records reflect the activities of the creator(s)? e) Are there files that do not conform to potential levels of arrangement?
