Spring seminars

  1. 1. Seminar #1 offered by: Luis A. ColónNanoparticles are a microscopic particle with at least one dimension less than 100nm.They may seem a little difficult to understand and sometimes unnecessary. Actually, there arereally important to the development of new treatments for diseases like cancer. These can be thesolution when trying to find an easier and more specific when prescribing. In Dr.Colon’slaboratory at University of Buffalo, fluorescence nanoparticles are being develop and researchedto see how they reduce or act against cancer tumors in rats. They main goal it’s to determinetheir effects and of course to use them as specific vehicles for drugs. Another area of active studyin Dr.Colon’s laboratory is the micro/nano-chemical analysis using electrophoresis and liquidchromatography. These techniques are the ones that make his laboratory researches so uniqueand interesting.Seminar #2 offered by:Denise de JesúsLegionella pneumophila, was discovered during a scientific convention in a scientificmeeting. No one knew what killed approximately 30 scientists until they discovered it was acurious gram-negative bacterium called Legionella pneumophila. This bacteria replicates in hostcells like human macrophages and amoeba and spreads through air. Legionella pneumophila hasa curious way of affecting the cell cycle in order to replicate. It has the power of changing thebiological clock of the body and turns it into its favor. But, what’s the power that this bacteriumhas to do it? Well, that’s the main question of Denise de Jesús and her research. Byunderstanding how this bacterium changes the cell cycle more effective treatments can bedevelop.Spring Seminars Summaries
