  1. 1. THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF CIVIC CROWDFUNDING Roberto Esposito DeRev - Founder & CEO CROWDSOURCING WEEK EUROPE Brussels - October 20th, 2015
  2. 2. Derev - WHY HERE, WHY NOW? HIGHEST AMOUNT RAISED IN A SINGLE CAMPAIGN +1.6 million of euro to rebuild Città della Scienza
  3. 3. OPPORTUNITIES WHAT’S THE «VALUE» OF THE CROWD (ON THE WEB)? The impact of people (through Facebook) on world economy Source: Deloitte, 2015 $227 billion global economic impact 4.5 million global jobs supported
  4. 4. FORECASTS THE UNSTOPPABLE RISE OF THE SHARING ECONOMY Sharing economy is a growing factor that will soon be relevant as traditional economic segments. Source: PriceWatehouseCoopers,2015
  5. 5. ACTUAL LANDSCAPE DATA & EXPERIENCES  Donation-based civic crowdfunding: roughly estimated $1.2 billion a year worldwide per year;  Civic crowdfunding is small-scale but relatively successful, and it has big ambitions. Currently the average civic crowdfunding project is small in scale: $6,357 is the median amount raised;  Civic crowdfunding is concentrated in cities (especially those where platforms are based);  Civic crowdfunding has the same highly unequal distributional tendencies as other crowd markets. 7. 7. ON THE SAME PLATFORM / 1: THE BEST WHAT WORKS Città della Scienza (1.6 million raised) 1. Cause: Special project (NOT general situation of crisis, but a real, deep emergency) 2. Impact: local but also glocal (donors from all over Italy and abroad) 3. Emotional: testimonials giving their endorsement on national and international media CASE HISTORY
  8. 8. ON THE SAME PLATFORM / 2: THE WORST WHAT DOES NOT WORK Museo della Mezzadria (less than 2.000 euro raised) 1. Cause: recovery from a natural disaster (but it affected all the territory - museum is not a priority) 2. Impact: ultra local (despite Siena has got one of the highest rate of volunteers contributing for causes in Italy) 3. Emotional: no one talked about it too much CASE HISTORY
  9. 9. 1) MAKING IT VISIBLE Using new interactive visualization tools to help community members focus projects’ impact on the territory. DEREV: DOING IT «CIVIC»
  10. 10. 2) ENGAGING BIG & RELEVANT PLAYERS Organizations, from governments to corporations and large foundations, are exploring ways to support crowdfunding for a much wider range of community-facing activities. DEREV: DOING IT «CIVIC»
  11. 11. 3) IMPROVING USER-FRIENDLINESS Including more and more payment options. DEREV: DOING IT «CIVIC»
  12. 12. 4) DIFFUSING KNOWLEDGE, EVEN AND EVEN MORE DEREV: DOING IT «CIVIC»
  13. 13. THE CHALLENGES a) Give sense to a meaningful story Focus on a specific project rather than funding general management budget. b) Engage local community  What's the actual, concrete value of the project’s objective? Is it emotional and/or rational?  Hosting live events and experiences for community members during the campaign  Invite residents to be ambassadors, active promoters of the project DEREV: DOING IT «CIVIC»
  14. 14. WHAT’S CIVIC CROWDFUNDING FOR? ENJOY Civic Crowdfunding as COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT TOOL “Giving the world – the place – you live in a new shape” DIRECTIONS
  15. 15. WHAT’S CIVIC CROWDFUNDING FOR? USE Civic Crowdfunding as VALUE MAPPING TOOL “A grid to assess, organize and express emerging needs of your community” DIRECTIONS
