  • Artificial light can be divided into warm and cool light. Florescent lights have a cool bluish cast that tends to flatten colors. It is a bit harsher and sometimes causes hard surfaces to appear harder. Incandescent or halogen light throws a yellow cast. It tends to highlight a room's colorations with a warmer more comfortable ambiance.
  • There are nine color pallets because there is not one lifestyle that works for everyone. There is more to it than just color; it has to do with texture, shape, form and function.

    1. 1. TALK: Conversation with…. Christina Rougerie Interiors + Staging is a Kingwood, TX based Interior Staging and Redesign firm servicing Harris County, TX and surrounding areas that specializes in residential décor. Christina has always been driven to create beauty and elegance for others through interior design. Her attraction to the French culture and architecture combined with trips to Paris, Provence and the countryside, has given her an upper hand to bring a European touch to her creativity. With her 15 years corporate business experience and appetite for interior styling, art and photography, she founded her own Interior Home Staging & Design Firm in 2008 to bring her clients an affordable solution that marries functional and comfortable design. Topics of discussion: • Furniture face-lift with Paint • How lighting will effect color: Natural light VS Artificial lighting • Color Trend Forecast for 2014 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 1
    2. 2. Furniture Face-Lift with Paint Before After 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 2
    3. 3. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 3 Painting vintage furniture is a sure way to update the finish color while not changing the integrity or style of the piece. • This adds a sense of freshness when choosing soft color hues like whites, soft blues, and lavenders. a. For a shabby chic cottage finish you can distress the edges or not • To add drama and sophistication you can paint furniture pieces in dark colors like navy blue, blacks and burgundy hues. • For a more whimsical or fun finish you can paint: a. Stripes b. Stenciling c. Chalk paint or Wallpaper on face of drawers d. Two tones i. Example - Dressers painted one color and keep the face of the drawers untouched or painted a different color. With the cost of a can of paint you can be sure that you are getting the biggest bang for your buck. Some of the best pieces of furniture are found outside department store ie Kingwood Home décor! When shopping for furniture you have to think of mood and style on top function and scale. Then you can choose paint to fit the design concept for your space.
    4. 4. How Lighting will effect color: Natural light VS Artificial lighting • Morning Daylight – Cool daylight absorbs the coolness and shifts color towards warmer pigments. • Strongest Daylight – Very bright direct sunlight washes out colour and lightens and whitens it. • Fading Daylight – Mixed light cancels both warm and cool shifting color duller and neutral. • Artificial Night Light – Warm lights absorb warmth shifting it to cool pigments. • Effect of Natural Light Exposures on Colours • North – Adds Blue and overhead skylights dulls colour • East – Adds Green • West – Adds Orange • South – Adds Yellow-White and washes out colour Source: http://www.daystudio.com/ 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 5
    5. 5. Color Trend Forecast for 2014 • Pantone trend forecast book names nine key color and design themes for home furnishings and interior design for the year 2014. They are: Techno Color, Physicality, Sculpted Simplicity, Fluidity, Collage, Intimacy, Moda, Tribal Threads and Eccentricities. We will be seeing prevalent colors being green, red/orange, yellow, pink, purple, white, grey and neutral- Blue being the most popular for 2014 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 6
    6. 6. Techno Color recognizes technology, its advances, the speed at which it is advancing and how it is impacting the world of design. Technology is expanding the color universe through a melding of both vibrant and deep hues frequently executed in reflective surfaces. Shades like faceted Emerald and a turquoise-like blue, an exuberant orange and a strong, vital purple plus a true blue, Jet Black and Dark Citron are intertwined in intriguingly inventive color combinations. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 7
    7. 7. Physicality speaks to the colors of power and energy counterbalanced by the presence of hues that express the necessity for introspection and calmness. Forged iron, satellite gray, antique moss and gothic olive, strong, solid colors, are interplayed with the healing shades of herbal lavender, grayed grape, rosy brown and a quiet, ephemeral foggy gray. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 8
    8. 8. Sculpted Simplicity speaks to how important shape, form and structure are to the end product and/or environment. The colors are unassuming and do not take center stage. The sophisticated tones elegantly harmonize with distinctively nuanced undertones, and include travertine, anthracite, blanc de blanc and twilight mauve, supported by an anodized brown, ethereal gray and a suggestion of silver. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 9
    9. 9. Fluidity is the palette that understands the inevitable human need for life-sustaining cool water tones, and is rendered largely in dazzling blues and blue-greens. These cooling hues include absinthe green, violet tulle, blazing Samoan sun, dewberry purple and two orange-coral tones. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 10
    10. 10. Collage is about the home being a gathering place for found objects that are well worn and somewhat nostalgic – a charming mélange of artfully constructed designs that demonstrate ingenuity and resourcefulness. There is poignancy in this palette with color and design sounding a familiar chord. Tea rose, deep reddish rhubarb, warm pumpkin spice and cozy sheepskin, are refreshed with margarita green, provincial blue and cascading tones of aqua and teal make up this grouping. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 11
    11. 11. Intimacy implies a certain affinity and relationship expressed in tints and tones that are inviting in nature and softly tactile – closely connected, yet subtly different, a happy marriage of adaptable warm, cool and neutral tones. The palette includes gardenia white, lotus blossom pink, rose cloud, fawn and café crème, while pale lavenders and opal gray. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 12
    12. 12. Moda Both svelte and voluptuous, Moda speaks of attention to detail and the drama of high fashion when translated into interiors. Combinations can be theatrical in nature, displaying fashionable or whimsical flourishes, but always done with tasteful finesse. Red dahlia interacts with blackberry cordial and wood violet, all accented by a yellowed amber green. Corsican blue meets with magenta haze and an expressive linden green, while rich gold waits in the wings for the appropriate moment to add a glimmering finale to any of the combinations.” 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 13
    13. 13. Tribal Threads We are all members of tribes whether through cultural background, religion, political affiliation or community. Tribal Threads color palette is as varied as the tribal diversity it represents, yet they construct a universal linkage of artistic appreciation rooted in personal expression. Color combinations may be disarmingly simple or as complex as inter-woven threads. Included are neutrals, such as bleached sand and kangaroo brown, burnt orange, goblin blue, curry, peppercorn, and a rose-dusted cedar shade. 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 14
    14. 14. Eccentricities is tongue-in-cheek in attitude with color juxtapositions that are highly original and cleverly conceived in evocative combinations. A flash of neon green radiates off of zesty lemon or nectarine combines with a daredevil Skydiver blue. Fudgesickle brown is rendered sweeter with Strawberry Ice. A warm red coexists with its cooler counterpart, while black and/or white can be drawn into any combination, 9/3/2013 ©Christina Rougerie 2008 15
