  2. 2. Life right after school was tough. I hIa dh saudp esruhpereor ehxepreoct aetxiopnes cftora tmiyosneslf , for myself, but found the real world less than super.
  3. 3. I was a pretty normal college student. I had some fun, learned a ton, made some friends, I was a pretty normal college student. and graduated with about $30,000 in student loan debt, but I thought I had a plan to pay the loans.

  7. 7. After saying goodbye to roommates and saying hello to mom’s curfew and dad’s basement, I started getting loads of unsolicited financial advice.
  8. 8. I was told to… Just skip out on payment!! Postpone payment! Speak with an “inexpensive loan consolidation expert”
  9. 9. I started getting nervous thinking about how I’d have to go 120 MONTHS making payments. I mean, how many things have you done every month for 10 years? So, I made an important phone call.
  10. 10. I spoke with the people at my school’s financial aid office. They advised me to… Use the websites and tools available. These websites could help you take control of your financial situation.
  11. 11. I was skeptical, but I checked out the link they sent me. www. studentaid.ed.gov
  12. 12. I watched some videos.
  13. 13. I entered my student loan information and…
  14. 14. I took control of MY Attitude Income Student loans
  15. 15. I morphed into . . .
  16. 16. REPAYREADY MAN saving students from debt destruction
  17. 17. These online tools - calculators, videos, and the Repayment Estimator – became my weapons against delinquency.
  18. 18. Now, I save student loan borrowers from crushing student loan payments, fill them with repayment confidence, and wear great elastic pants. I make it look easy – because with these online resources – it is!
  19. 19. Knowledge is power! And knowing my servicer and their contact information, well, it didn’t make me stronger than a locomotive or faster than a speeding bullet, but it EMPOWERED me.
  20. 20. Soon I was the one offering advice, but my advice was good and I’ll share it with you . . .
  21. 21. Go to www.studentaid.ed.gov log-in and see all your federal loans and get your servicer name and contact information.
  22. 22. With your servicer behind you and all your loans listed in front of you, use the Repayment Estimator at http://1.usa.gov/19S8Yr1. When I first used the Estimator, it was like a light being turned on in a dark room. I was able to see just how much more affordable my payment would be by filing for Income Based Repayment.
  23. 23. You may find that Standard Repayment is the most cost effective in the long run or that Graduated Payments can help you get affordable payments now, but still pay off your loans in 10 years. Each student borrower in distress is different, but all can be saved by seeing the light.
  24. 24. After conferring with your sidekick and using the Estimator, you can complete paperwork to change your repayment plan at https://studentloans.gov. The forms aren’t easy, but it’s worth it to complete them.
  25. 25. Next, make sure you can make your new monthly payment by creating a budget for each month. There are many ways to make a budget, but an easy template is available through Microsoft. Download it at http://bit.ly/VQfybB
  26. 26. Congratulations! You’ve created a repayment plan, but we’re not done yet. Set-up automated payments. Not only will it save you stamps, it’ll save you .25% on your interest rates. Contact your servicer.
  27. 27. Next, brace yourself for a sense of pride and accomplishment to wash over you because you’ve taken the steps to stare down your student loans. With this challenge aside, proceed boldly with the rest of your financial life.
