  7. 7. Q1. Do you use social media to deliver services in your library? (such as current awareness, monitoring clientsand prospects etc.) 1 Use Twitter to monitor clients Jun 27, 2012 8:49 AM 2 Lexis Publisher Alerts Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM 3 I use it to monitor items of interest to research staff, its for internal library use Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM only. 4 Flickr, YouTube, Twitter Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM 5 To locate foreign & hard-to-find materials for patrons Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM 6 If you consider RSS, otherwise no. Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM 7 We use it mostly for marketing and to look cool, but also to disseminate Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM interesting information that may not be appropriate for email. We also search social media sites for client mentions. 8 But not as a standard practices. We have monnitored twitter for tweets on a Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM specific topic 9 We find info/news on Twitter and then put it in an email. 8. 8. Q2. I use twitter for (select all that apply) 1 To keep up to date with professional associations Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM 2 meet up option Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM 3 Researching specific topics and CI environmental monitoring Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM 4 I use it in my personal life, but not for work. Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM 5 To find information about people and companies Jun 22, 2012 8:43 AM 6 Focused use (through Hootsuite) for intelligence gathering Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM 7 Nah. I use sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Jigsaw, Spokeo, as corporate Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM intelligence tools, to find out more about people and businesses, than they realize theyre giving away for free. 8 Following personal interests Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM 9 As a way to learn from others in other industries & other locations. 10. 10. Q3. Social media is a passing fad? 1 Its part of our culture. Jun 27, 2012 10:09 AM 2 I havent really seen anything go away so I figure its here to stay. Jun 27, 2012 8:49 AM 3 I think parts of it are but other tools will be adopted by the majority of young Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM users. Still out on how much coporate america or law firms will use some of the tools. 4 Im pretty sure you cant put the genie back in the bottle. Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM 5 Social Media remains an evolving tool, but it has too much mass to be a fad. Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM 6 I think technology is so ingrained in our society today it will not go away only Jun 27, 2012 6:44 AM increase. 7 People are too used to the instant gratification of social media. It might change Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM and morph into something else, but it will always be there. 8 I think its a great way to connect with people and is only getting better. Jun 27, 2012 6:14 AM 9 As a Library tool, I believe most social media (Facebook, Pinterest) is a fad; Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM however, user-generated content from places like Twitter and YouTube may be useful for research/current awareness purposes. 10 I think it will evolve over time, but still be a viable communication method. Jun 27, 2012 5:53 AM 11 It may or may not be. There are many ways to communicate and I am not sure Jun 27, 2012 5:38 AM which way will dominate. 12 It may drastically change over time, but I dont think that it will go away..... Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM 13 Our firm has not yet embraced Twitter or Facebook. Jun 26, 2012 7:13 PM 14 I kind of wish it was but it is here to stay. Jun 26, 2012 3:58 PM 15 It may change format, but I think people enjoy the quickness and the connectivity Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM that it provides. 16 But I think that the most effective way of using it has yet to be identified. Just Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM because you have a tool does not mean it should be used for everything and constantly. "Stuff" gets lost in the white noise and people dont always discern well when it is best used. 17 It will form another information stream. Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM 18 It has transformed society. It will continue to evolve but it wont disappear. Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM 19 The tools we use will change but not the new behaviors that we are seeing with Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM younger generations. 20 Not a fad, but unsure of use in the industry Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM 21 Regardless of whether it is or isnt, any librarian who does not at least know Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM about Twitter and its uses should fold up his/her tents and move on to an admin 10 of 35
  11. 11. Q3. Social media is a passing fad? assistant job. 22 Who knows what is in store for the future but some form of social media will be a Jun 26, 2012 7:09 AM part of it. 23 Not a fad, more a flavour - one of many ways to glean current awareness Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM information 24 I THINK THAT NOW THAT FOLKS ARE USING IT THEY ARE ONLY GOING Jun 25, 2012 3:38 PM TO WANT BETTER AND BROADER APPLICATIONS FOR USING IT. 25 It could be. People are having less time keeping up with social media. Plus, I Jun 23, 2012 8:28 PM think people are concerned about their privacy and social media does not seem to protect it enough. 26 Absolutely not, but firm policy doesnt support it; most social media sites are Jun 22, 2012 2:39 PM blocked by fire wall and firm devices dont allow social media apps.... 27 The concept is not a passing fad, some of the its instruments may be. Jun 22, 2012 1:48 PM Remember Friendster? 28 It is being incorporated in our work as a good tool Jun 22, 2012 1:36 PM 29 People enjoy being social and using technology. It will remain a source of Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM information and background, although the audience may not stay as broad as it is now 30 Social media isnt a fad, its constantly developing! Jun 22, 2012 7:43 AM 31 Its too useful for professional purposes to disappear. Jun 22, 2012 7:42 AM 32 i think its here to stay, but will continue to change and evolve at a very quick Jun 22, 2012 7:08 AM pace. 33 It may fad a bit, but I believe its hear to stay. People like to connect with each Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM other! 34 Not a passing fad and likely to become more prevalent in the workplace as a Jun 22, 2012 6:21 AM means of communication since it is used by the "young folks" as their main source of communication. 35 The vehicles may change but the concept will remain. Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM 36 Im not sure Facebook and Twitter will be around in 10 years, but there will be Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM something we all use to cmmunicate in the same way. 37 Like anything else thats new, itll lead to the next thing....which might be "better". Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM Social media is whatever you want it to be. It can be lots of things or have lots of uses....or it can be nothing and ignored. Ive ceased using RSS feeds and use Twitter for breaking news. 38 I dont use any of it, but as an observer I suspect I will at some point. It will Jun 22, 2012 6:00 AM evolve, of course. 11 of 35
  12. 12. Q3. Social media is a passing fad? 39 Social media is just an extension of how we communicate already. I think its a Jun 22, 2012 5:07 AM natural development of communication technology. 40 I think social media will be around for a very long time. In 5 years it will look Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM nothing like Facebook or Twitter 41 With the growth in smart phones, social media is becoming more ubiquitious Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM 42 It s hard to tell right now whether it is a fad, but it just seems that it wont be Jun 21, 2012 3:17 PM around in 5-10 years as something new and better will come along that replaces social media -- who knows what it will be. 43 It has its place, but as too often with new technology, people jump on the Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM bandwagon before they determine the possible benefits and limitations 44 Its becoming the way we live now. For younger people, theyre constantly Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM connected & via more than one device simultaneously. 45 I think it will evolve, but its not over. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM 12 of 35

  14. 14. Q4. I see little use for social media in my library. 1 We are a law firm of 340 attorneys. Our new intranet (as Sharepoint portal) is Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM serving in this function to a large extent. 2 We arent using it too much in our library, but that doesnt mean we arent Jun 27, 2012 10:09 AM thinking about the uses. 3 We would need younger customers is order to invest the time and effort to roll Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM out any adoptable social media tool. The generational issues make this effort not worth it right now. 4 Im sure there is something to be done; I just dont know exactly what and how. Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM 5 Research tips, location, and new sources pushed out close to the group or via Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM Twitter. just thinking off the cuff. 6 More and more attorneys ask for it and new ways of getting info. Jun 27, 2012 6:44 AM 7 It helps me keep on top of breaking news and current trends & topics. It also Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM helps me to get immediate help if I put up a "bat signal" to fellow librarians. 8 I see a lot of potential for it but I havent gone through the process of Jun 27, 2012 6:14 AM implementing. 9 It is pointless to try to promote a private law library using social media sites like Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM Facebook because those applications are primarily used by people for fun, not to conduct business. 10 My users mainly communicate via e-mail. Jun 27, 2012 5:53 AM 11 When people are bombarded with e-mail, facebook, twitter, voice mail and any Jun 27, 2012 5:38 AM other means, they will tune out. 12 Im 2 yrs from retirement & see limited use for it in its current form Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM 13 Eventually we will catch up. Our firm has just hired a social media person in Jun 26, 2012 7:13 PM Marketing who I hope will bring us into the future. 14 I have posted questions on relevant groups on LinkedIn and Facebook to locate Jun 26, 2012 3:15 PM obscure or foreign documents. 15 Bill rates are too high for consultants/attorneys to be constantly interupted by Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM trivial matters, plus the issue with material confidentiality. 16 I see a lot of need to find other means, but most of the people I work with dont Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM use it and do not. 17 It would be great but our IT department has everything so locked down that its Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM nearly impossible to implement any social media initiatives. 18 We need to be on top of any information trend, source, fad, service, etc. These Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM tools are just another way to gather information. 19 Could be useful for engaging with digital natives and remaining relevant and Jun 26, 2012 7:09 AM credible. 14 of 35
  15. 15. Q4. I see little use for social media in my library. 20 Until we find better ways to harvest meaningful information from the torrent, we Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM cannot take advantage of what might be useful for us to act upon or pass on. 21 Not sure how is all works, but if it is a means for getting out information, Ill try it. Jun 25, 2012 3:38 PM 22 I use it for my own information to stay current. And as a second track at Jun 25, 2012 1:04 PM conferences. 23 Unless the firm is going to have an initiative where attorneys are using social Jun 23, 2012 8:28 PM media more, I dont think the audience is there for my library. 24 But were too understaffed to implement anything radical Jun 22, 2012 2:39 PM 25 For the moment. Attorneys here arent early adopters. Jun 22, 2012 1:48 PM 26 It can be a great tool to dissiminate information Jun 22, 2012 1:36 PM 27 Our firm has Yammer, but the group of users is small and it allows silos of social Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM activity. Weve tried it some but couldnt figure out how to manage reference questions that roll in that way. People expect immediate and relatively public responsiveness on it and I couldnt integrate it into my existing workload. 28 Right now. We dont have much of a user base yet. Jun 22, 2012 8:17 AM 29 Whats wrong with e-mail? The last thing I need is 4 more places to remember Jun 22, 2012 7:54 AM to check every day 30 It has great potential for information gathering but little for marketing or Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM information dissemination 31 Our It set up and library service delivery do not lend themselves to the Jun 22, 2012 7:42 AM integration of social media. 32 It can be used as a research tool. I just see little use as an internal marketing Jun 22, 2012 7:10 AM tool in my small-law firm library. 33 Its not somthing I see my attorneys wanting from the library, although it is Jun 22, 2012 7:08 AM prevelant in the outward facing firm. 34 Depends on which platofrm. We use wikis increasingly, but adoption is slow. Jun 22, 2012 7:03 AM 35 If more of my attorneys were on Twitter I might use it more to push info, but I Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM definitely use Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn for finding info on People, Companies and for keeping up to date in the profession. 36 For right now, yes. E-mail and/or portal is still the preferred means of Jun 22, 2012 6:21 AM communication. 37 People are inundated with information. Hard to get them to read the emails we Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM send. Might appeal to a certain audience but not all. 38 Most social media relies on: 1) constantly updated content - not sure we would Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM really have all that much to push out and 2) the willingness of the attorneys to constantly be reading that content - which they wouldnt - they wont even read 15 of 35
  16. 16. Q4. I see little use for social media in my library. the current awareness emails they begged me for and 3) brevity - not all current awareness can be reduced to 140 characters (not all of it SHOULD) 39 See no. 2. Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM 40 Hey, Im being phased out! I just do books. Jun 22, 2012 6:00 AM 41 We could be using it for the reasons listed above, but were still trying to catch up Jun 22, 2012 5:07 AM to how we think our services should be. 42 My attorneys are not tech savvy. Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM 43 Until our firm lightens up its policies! Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM 44 Its hard to have attorneys in my firm pay attention to the e-mails I send, so I Jun 21, 2012 3:17 PM dont think they would pay attention to any postings in social media. 45 Information overload. There are plenty of tools pushing info to our attorneys Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM already 46 From comments in the catalog on books to another way to communicate Jun 21, 2012 2:33 PM information, this is an area we are looking to use in the library. 47 We could do much with SM in promoting services, delivering services, etc. Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM 48 There appear to be a number of pitfalls and I dont want to take the risks. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM 49 But Im not sure how to implement it in a firm setting. Jun 21, 2012 2:13 PM 50 I use it for competitive intelligence Jun 21, 2012 2:05 PM 16 of 35
  17. 17. Q5. I check LinkedIn, Facebook and/or Twitter at least 1 Facebook once every three months Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM 2 I use Linkedin & Facebook for info on litigants & corp. officials Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM 3 Linked-in every 2 or 3 months - Not on other 2 Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM 4 Not so much LinkedIn - usually only once a day, but I am on FB and Twitter all Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM the time. 5 LinkedIn weekly Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM 6 Once or twice a week. Jun 22, 2012 8:17 AM 7 maybe once every 2 weeks Jun 22, 2012 7:01 AM 8 I have FB and Twitter open all day. Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM 17 of 35
  18. 18. Q6. My firm allows access to social media sites at work. 1 I had to request permission for our two research librarians to have access to Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM Facebook & Twitter for legitimate work purposes. They often search for information about plaintiffs and expert witnesses. 2 well theyre not blocked and linkedin accounts are encouraged. Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM 3 To library staff and marketing only Jun 27, 2012 6:35 AM 4 I have special permission to access Twitter. The entire firm has Linkedin. Only Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM library research staff have Facebook. 5 n/a Im employed at a public universitys law library Jun 26, 2012 3:19 PM 6 The sites are not blocked. Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM 7 Sort of, if I kept facebook open I would get questions. I am allowed on occasion Jun 26, 2012 2:37 PM to check it without a problem. Same does not apply to linked in. 8 Facebook yes, Twitter no Jun 25, 2012 10:10 AM 9 Except MySpace Jun 22, 2012 8:43 AM 10 For some people - have to prove a business need! Jun 22, 2012 8:02 AM 11 Have to get special pemission. Jun 22, 2012 6:17 AM 12 I use my own hardware. Visiting "social media" sites on firm-provided equipment Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM is not allowed. 13 For work purposes Jun 21, 2012 4:28 PM 14 Mostly - I have to make a business case for the individual sites. Jun 21, 2012 3:26 PM 15 We can, but I am sure it is monitored for non-firm use Jun 21, 2012 2:38 PM 18 of 35
  19. 19. Q7. My firm has the following internal enterprise social media tools (select all that apply) 1 A new Sharepoint portal (launched May 15th). Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM 2 Yammer Jun 27, 2012 7:24 AM 3 While the intranet has the capability to house blogs and wikis, the Sharepoint Jun 26, 2012 2:36 PM interface is so clunky that nobody bothers to use them. 4 Some attorneys have their own blogs. We help them with source information. Jun 26, 2012 9:42 AM 5 Yammer Jun 25, 2012 3:42 PM 6 We use sharepoint, which includes wikis, blogs, and discussion boards, but no- Jun 22, 2012 7:54 AM one uses them. 7 Internal e-mail lists. Jun 22, 2012 7:10 AM 8 We have Sharepoint which we use for our Intranet and which can be used for Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM discussion boards and collaboration, but which we defintely dont take full advantage of. 9 BUT - I wouldnt really call them enterprise, because the tools are only being Jun 21, 2012 3:19 PM used by certain groups for certain groups. 10 We use sharepoint pages to collaborate, though definitley there is room for Jun 21, 2012 2:33 PM growth 11 They have some test wikis and a group of us have experimented with IM, Jun 21, 2012 2:26 PM microblogging. 12 SharePoint, used on a limited basis. Jun 21, 2012 2:16 PM 19 of 35
  20. 20. Q8. The library curates and pushes out content on (select all that apply) 1 Facebook Jun 26, 2012 3:19 PM 2 IT owns external electronic communication methods of any kind for security Jun 26, 2012 2:49 PM purposes. 3 RSS feeds via Ozmosys Jun 26, 2012 2:39 PM 4 Library does none of this but the Competitive Intelligence group is in Business Jun 26, 2012 2:32 PM Development and Marketing, and is doing some. 5 Electronic content via our OPACs EMC Jun 22, 2012 2:39 PM 6 We talked about this but have not initiated anything Jun 22, 2012 10:01 AM 7 Our Library Intranet Site using Sharepoint Jun 22, 2012 6:51 AM 8 None. Jun 22, 2012 6:37 AM 9 none listed; e-subscriptions only. Jun 22, 2012 6:15 AM 10 Intranet Jun 22, 2012 6:03 AM 11 Intranet Jun 21, 2012 3:26 PM 20 of 35

  22. 22. Q9. What do you like best about social media? 1 Personally it helps me stay connected with friends and family. Jun 27, 2012 11:38 AM 2 Ease of use to send out information. Jun 27, 2012 10:09 AM 3 seeing what others are doing Jun 27, 2012 8:59 AM 4 the timeliness of the information Jun 27, 2012 8:49 AM 5 The instantaneous information fix Jun 27, 2012 8:22 AM 6 its popularity Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM 7 The near-real time sharing Jun 27, 2012 7:27 AM 8 N/A Jun 27, 2012 7:24 AM 9 connectedness, power to the people Jun 27, 2012 7:02 AM 10 connection with others Jun 27, 2012 6:44 AM 11 The current news on legal matters. Jun 27, 2012 6:35 AM 12 Its instant and its free. Jun 27, 2012 6:16 AM 13 I like how easy it is to use (most of the time) Jun 27, 2012 6:14 AM 14 Its great for passive socailizing with those Id otherwise have lost contact with. Jun 27, 2012 6:13 AM 15 Networking opportunities Jun 27, 2012 5:53 AM 16 everything Jun 27, 2012 5:42 AM 17 I am not a user of social media. Jun 27, 2012 5:38 AM 18 nothing Jun 27, 2012 5:04 AM 19 Not much. What role do you think social media tools will play in your job and your profession as a librarian. 46 I think it will have a role, most likely librarians will need to evaluate the content Jun 22, 2012 10:01 AM and help administer. I am looking to those at the forefront to explain how. 47 I hope it has very little role honestly. I find the professional Twitter thing Jun 22, 2012 9:04 AM distasteful and part of the erosion of the boundaries between work and personal life. Id like to keep them separate thanks. Jun 22, 2012 7:54 AM 52 Replace print and blog/wiki online current awareness tools that arent as timely. Jun 22, 2012 7:47 AM 53 A very big role. Jun 22, 2012 7:43 AM 54 It helps keep me up to date, and allows me to monitor news and developments Jun 22, 2012 7:42 AM in many areas my firm has interests in. 55 As another research tool. Jun 22, 2012 7:10 AM 56 Its an excellent way to keep up with colleagues and issuess throughout the US Jun 22, 2012 7:08 AM and world. 57 Exposure through social media is likely to help me find my next position Jun 22, 2012 7:03 AM 58 There is too much personal info out there about each of us as it is, we dont need Jun 22, 2012 7:01 AM to add any extra.
