Breadfinal

  1. 1. Value of one loaf of bread in the Hurricane Sandy relief effort
  2. 2. Problem: How can local citizens who want to help, offerassistance to those in need in NYC after the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy?
  3. 3. Reframing the problemIssues to consider: Working the 8 hour shifts at food shelters not possible Needs to be a “kid-friendly” solution
  4. 4. Initial Solution: Bake at home and deliver to those in need of food!! VALUE • Providing those in need with not only nourishment, but also a sense of hope • Connection to a greater cause • Teaching the value of helping others to children
  5. 5. Using social media to find out what is really needed #sandy says that our local f0od drop off center needs more protein In fact, they are overloaded with carbs
  6. 6. Adding something essential to the solution While the bread is rising and baking, cook up some high octane (but not too spicy, given the water shortage) protein full chili Baking bread and finding out where it was needed led to making something else that was even more essential in the moment
  7. 7. Ongoing ValueAfter our experience of baking and delivering bread to those in need, our group wanted to inspire others to do the same! BakingandbreakingBread.org is a blog we created for others to share theirexperiences baking (and chili making) for others in their time of need. Our hope is that this blog will inspire others to find simple ways to help others just as we did. Bakingandbreakingbread.org
