#2 GESTURAL INTERFACES Gestural interfaces
got popular due to the Minority Report movie (2002). A few years later Microsoft released Kinect. And now you can pretend to be Tom Cruise at home with the LEAP motion.
#3 HOUSEHOLD ROBOTS The Jetsons
(1962) and many other sci-fi films and series depicted robots to aid us in our household. JIBO is a robot that does just that… without the wheels.
#4 SELF-DRIVING CARS Not looking
as neat as Kitt from Knight Rider (1982) but Google’s self driving car does the trick. It even lacks a steering wheel so it must be driving on its own.
#5 SMOG FILLED CITIES The
movie Blade Runner (1982) depicted a polluted world with lots of smog which blocked the sunlight. Nowadays in Beijing the situation is very similar. Even so extreme that the government had to install a virtual sunset
#6 MEAL IN A CUP
Wall-E (2008) featured the people of the future as fat, lazy and endlessly sipping on a meal in a cup. Today you can buy Soylent. A powder that you can mix into a shake and has all the nutrition you need to get through the day.
#7 GROWING ORGANS In the
2005 movie The Island, people are being cloned to be harvested for organs. Fortunately today we have found other ways to grow organs.
#8 SMART PROSTHETICS In 1980,
audiences gasped when Luke Skywalker lost his hand. Luckily in a galaxy far far away they had some nifty prosthetics. But today, mind controlled prosthetics already exist and are getting more and more common.
#9 FULL BODY SCANNERS Total
Recall (1990) is full of iconic moments. One of them is the scene with the body scanner. Nowadays, just like in the movie, upon arrival or departure at an airport, you are screened by similar devices.
#10 LANDING ON A COMET
In 1998 Armageddon was a real blockbuster. 15 years later the ESA lands the PHILAE spacecraft on a comet. On its head and after several bounces. Just like the Bruce Willis’ crew.
