Turner Community Garden

  3. 3. The Turner Community Vegetable Garden is 12,000 square feet. The flower and picnic areas with the vegetable garden is about 1 & 1/2 acres.
  4. 4. This site was an illegal dumping site and quite an eye sore for the Turner community.
  5. 5. The area was cleared of trash, debris and brush.

  8. 8. Greenhouse to start vegetable & flower transplants Compost bins used to dispose of garden debris & create “black gold” soil amendment
  9. 9. Hoop house to extend the season & Minimize insects & disease problems Raised beds are utilized to improve drainage & reduce soil compaction.
  10. 10. Soil Testing The Turner Rec Camp youth helped collect soil samples from the garden
  11. 11. Water Conservation 1100 gal rain water collection & storage Drip irrigation
  12. 12. Erosion Control Use of terraces, wood mulch, leaf litter and straw bales to reduce soil erosion.
  13. 13. Plant-to-Plate Program This program teaches youth about growing vegetables and eating healthy, nutritious foods. EMG’s have taught nearly 1,000 youth in the Turner area about gardening.
