WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. XX, 2013) – This year, Susan G. Komen for the Cure celebrates the 30th anniversary of its Race for the Cure® series, recognized as the most successful and largest breast cancer fundraising event in the nation. Thanks to the efforts of the organization’s many supporters, including longtime advocate Courtney Leddell, the series has grown from an 800-person race in Dallas in 1983 to a series that today boasts over 100,000 volunteers, and more than 1.6 million participants in 140 races on four continents.

Komen for the Cure Celebrates 30th Anniversary of Race for the Cure® Series According to the American Cancer Society, it is estimated that more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013, with another nearly 40,000 women expected to die from the disease. After lung cancer, breast cancer is ranked as the second leading cancer-related cause of death in women. As one of the premier fundraising events for Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure® is a series of 5K runs and walks designed to raise money for breast cancer awareness, education, and research, and to honor those women who have both won and lost their battles with this disease.
