Nine days later he was leaving a restaurant in Medellin with his fiancée when he was killed by three men. One of them said “thanks for the own goal” and repeatedly shot X in the chest and face.As each bullet struck home the assailants shouted: “Goal”.Y claimed that he had only been taking a cold cure, but FIFA rejected this defense stating that he had tested positive for a cocktail of five banned drugs.

Identify X and Y.

 11. 11.

6. The club was formed as Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878 as the works team of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. The club's shirts were green and gold halves. They played on a small, dilapidated field on North Road for fifteen years, before moving to Bank Street in the nearby town of Clayton in 1893. In 1902, the club neared bankruptcy, with debts of over £2,500. At one point, their Bank Street ground was even closed by the bailiffs. Just before having to be shut down for good, the club received a sizeable investment from J. H. Davies, the managing director of a Breweries company who also became club chairman. It was decided at one of the early board meetings that the club required a change of name to reflect the fresh start they had been afforded. Many names were suggested, before Louis Rocca, a young immigrant from Italy, said "Gentlemen, why don't we call ourselves X?” The name stuck, and X officially came into existence on 26 April 1902. Davies also decided it would be appropriate to change the club's colors, abandoning the green and gold halves of Newton Heath.

Identify X.

 15. 15.

8. X is overweight, prone to childish antics and unpredictable, but at his best he was England’s greatest ever midfielders. Strong with a delicate touch, his passing and dribbling abilities were peerless, and he packed a powerful shot. Bought as a young lad by Terry Venebles from Newcastle in 1988, he helped Spurs to reach the 1991 FA Cup Final, where he badly injured his leg in a rash tackle. He moved to Lazio the following year but could not settle, and Glasgow Rangers bought him in 1995. He was voted Scottish Footballer of the year in 1996. He got his first cap in 1988 and had a memorable World Cup in 1990, ending with the famous tears when England lost to West Germany in the semi-final. He scored the goal of the tournament in Euro ’96 to put 2-0 England ahead against Scotland, but his career was terminated in 1998 by Glenn Hoddle. X moved to China but retired in 2003.

Identify X.

He also came on as a substitute in Ajax’s European cup win over AC Milan in 1995, and played in the 1996 defeat by Juventus. A serious heart valve condition threatened to end his career, but following corrective surgery X joined Arsenal in 1998. He had scored some memorable goals including a winning hat-trick in ten minutes against Chelsea, and a superb long range back-heel against Middlesborough. He was voted African Footballer of the year in 1996 and again in 1999.

Identify X.

Its current name has been used since 1975. Between 1975 and 1983 it had no host nation, and was held in a home and away fashion.Teams are also invited to participate in this tournament unlike any other international tournament. Nations receiving invitations are Costa Rica (1997, 2001, 2004), Honduras (2001), Japan (1999), Mexico (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007), and the United States (1993, 1995, 2007).

Identify X.

To add to the drama, Cahill had a goal disallowed as the referee had already blown for full time.It was the only the fourth match in the history of World Cup with three red cards. This resulted in Dyer receiving a red card for that particular game plus a further three game ban. Bowyer received a more severe punishment of a four game ban and a fine of more than £200,000 - approximately six weeks wages - as it was adjudged that he had attacked Dyer. Bowyer was charged in connection with the brawl by Northumbria Police with public order offences. In July 2006 he was fined £600 and ordered to pay £1000 in costs after admitting to using threatening behavior towards Dyer. Both players were later on sold (Bowyer in 2006 and Dyer in 2007) by Newcastle United.

Which clubs did these players play for in the 2007-2008 season?

 33. 35.

17. English football hit its nadir at the Hysel stadium in Brussels on May 29th 1985. All the ills of the game came together at the summit of European football: the final of the Champions Cup, Liverpool v Juventus. And when the dust had settled 39 people were dead and more than 400 injured. The stadium was a crumbling dinosaur; the fans were drunk, many of them ticket-less and there was no proper segregation; the policing was so inadequate that sticks, bottles and iron bars were easily smuggled into the stadium. Two sets of rival fans taunted each other, hurling insults and missiles, and Liverpool fans charged Juventus fans three times. An old wall collapsed under the pressure and in the ensuing panic people tumbled over each other and crushed each other to death. Meanwhile the police were using batons to clear the area while people lay dying. The FA reacted by withdrawing English clubs from European football. Despite Ibrox (1971), despite Bradford (1985), despite, Heysel (1985) football saw no need for root and branch reform. Until the next disaster !

What was the next disaster?

 37. 39.

19.Despite being some 100-odd yards away from the action, goalkeepers have been known to pop-up from time-to-time to score vital goals for their sides. None more so than Paraguayan goalie X. A dead ball specialist, he regularly scored from the penalty spot for both club and country and held the record for the most career goals by a goalkeeper until Brazilian Y came along and toppled his figure of 62 career goals. In 1998 X captured the attention of the World's sporting press after curling a free kick around the wall and past his opposite number during an International against Argentina in Buenos Aires and in 1999 he became the first goalkeeper to score a hat-trick in the history of the game (for Velez Sarsfield against Ferro Carril Oeste).

Identify X and Y.

It hosted nine matches in the tournament, and reportedly squeezed in 199,854 spectators for the World Cup final against Uruguay.
