In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? <ul><li>Andrew Goodwin writing in ‘Dancing in the Distraction Factory’ (1992) </li></ul><ul><li>Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routing for boy/girl band) </li></ul><ul><li>There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals, and music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying or contradicting) </li></ul><ul><li>The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style) </li></ul><ul><li>There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body </li></ul><ul><li>There is often intertextual references (to films, TV programmes, other music videos etc) </li></ul>

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? <ul><li>Following and challenging forms and conventions </li></ul><ul><li>The band were all dressed in stereotypical metal fashions </li></ul><ul><li>The shots used were predominantly performance based </li></ul><ul><li>- The location is not particularly dark but still has connotations of fear and mystery </li></ul><ul><li>- The shots are mostly cut very quickly in keeping with the beat of the song as it is quite fast paced </li></ul><ul><li>- There are small references to the album cover, as there are several bare trees featured in the video, also as seen on the cover </li></ul><ul><li>- Parts are filmed in black and white, which also corresponds with the album artwork </li></ul><ul><li>- There is a very loose storyline involved, where the vocalist is portrayed as the ‘hunter’ mentioned in the lyrics. This was not constructed to seem obvious and instead requires the audience to interpret it themselves </li></ul><ul><li>- There are a lot of shots featuring the vocalist, but the audience does not get to see her face which is quite unconventional for this genre as usually the vocalist is the main focus </li></ul>In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? <ul><li>Following and challenging forms and conventions </li></ul><ul><li>The main front cover image is a photograph, but it has been digitally edited and enhanced </li></ul><ul><li>- Members of the band are featured on the inside cover of the digipak </li></ul><ul><li>- The album (“Wages of Sin”) is not named after a song on the album, however the name does relate to the themes of some of the songs, for example “The First Deadly Sin”, “Burning Angel” and “Savage Messiah” all relate to the idea of sin </li></ul><ul><li>- The photographs used throughout represent mystery, fear and emptiness, especially the bare trees </li></ul><ul><li>The record label is featured on the spine - The photographs correspond with the setting of the video, which maintains consistency </li></ul>
