Zawisza Czarny camefrom Garbow. He wasborn in 1370, died in1428 in Serbia. He wasthe most famous PolishKnight and nobleman, hewas invincible inmultiple tournaments.
During his life Zawiszawas regarded as a modelof’ knightly virtues. Hewas brave, strong andfaightful. He always kepthis word. His friendscould rely on him in everysituation. He took care ofwidows, orphants and hehelped poor and weakpeople.
His emblem was ablack eagle as a signof strenght and threeprecious stones.
He was a greatdiplomat andone of the friendsof Polish kingWladyslawJagiello.He served hisking andprotected him.
In 1410 he took part in theBattle of Grunwaldagainst the TeutonicOrder. After the battle heproposed a peace treatybetween the King ofPoland and KingSigismund ofLuxembourg of Hungary.
In 1416 he participated in a tournament in Perpignan in which he defeated the well- known invincible knight John of Aragon. This way The Black Knight became a victor and he gain great fame among European Knights.
His nickname The Black is due to his black hair and his custom-made, black armor which is kept in Jasna Góra Monastery.
Zawisza became a folk hero, famed for reliability, and loyalty. In Polish language we have a proverb „you can rely on me as on Zawisza”
