In December 2015, the United Nations General Assembly at its 70th Session declared 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
Of the process in NY that lead to the adoption of this Resolution we have as the lead sponsor: Samoa And as Core Sponsors: Indonesia, Maldives, Morocco In total 143 countries supported: 121 out of those are UNWTO Member States….
The UN General Assembly has invited UNWTO to “facilitate the organization and implementation of the International Year, in collaboration with Governments, relevant organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organizations and other relevant stakeholders”
This makes the UNWTO as the leading agency to coordinate all IY related activities on a global basis.
The International Year 2017 comes 50 years after the celebration of the International Tourist Year on Tourism - Passport to Peace (1967) and fifteen years after the International Year of Ecotourism, which was celebrated in 2002.
We are at a particularly important moment as the international community embraced the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) only last September.
Tourism features in the Outcome document “Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” and is included as a target in three out of the 17 Goals, namely Goal 8.9, 12.b. and 14.7.

The Dandelion represents Planet Earth—a planet
where people, as seeds, travel in a sustainable and
responsible way. By travelling, these seeds connect
to others through knowledge and culture, and thus
build a better future.
