Art in times of the Great War
What is avant-garde?
Group of trends and directions of art that were created in 20th century.
They were discarding pervious styles, creating their very own world and
looking for a new, fresh way of exposure. After First World War it was
developing in European countries and was totally prohibited in
Avant-garde artist’s thinking
• rejecting cultural output
• creating new directions in art - trailblazing
• aloof approach towards existing directions of art
• seeing art as a precursor of development of society
• taking inspiration from science and technology
Kinds of avant-garde
With short descriptions
Assumption of futurism was to look in the future and reject all
traditional and old-fashion works. It did not believe in tradition and
wanted everything to be done from scratch, being new and modern.
Futurism artists were really into aestetics and believed that they are
real „soul guides”.
Assumption to present the world from subjective perspective, trying to
envoke emotions and moods. Artists were more into expressing
feelings and emotions then reality.
Assumption to create new rules of three-dimensional art and to reject
the existing rules of perspective. Artist that had made cubism very
popular is well-known Pablo Picasso.
Assumption of arbitrariness of artistic expression, rejecting all terms
connected with tradition and freedom of creativity. Artists were the
witnesses of the Great War and were suffering the feeling of break-up
Assumption of insurrection towards classicism, realism, empirism,
rationalism and conventions in art. The artists of this direction that are
well-known are Salvador Dali and surrealists inspiration – Heronim

Artists wanted to search new expression of esthetic. Their thinking was
also very modern and minimalistic

wanted to emphasize the importance of intelect and theory.
Assumption to focus on the concept of using land, environment and
nature in art. Artists of this direction tried to do their works in open
space, out of doors.
Assumption to use simple techniques, shapes, surfaces and size. Artists
