2. Cancer Screenings
Screening tests look for cancer in people who do not have
any symptoms. Screenings can help find cancer at an early
stage, which makes it easier to treat. If a doctor suggests a
screening test, he or she does not necessarily think you
have cancer.
Please note: We encourage consumers to thoroughly review and understand

3. Prostate Cancer Screening Guidelines
There are a number of factors that may qualify
a patient for prostate cancer screening:
• Age - Generally over the age of 50
• Race - African-American men have a higher
risk for unknown reasons.
• Nationality - Asian men, for example, have a
lower risk.
• Diet - Red meat and dairy products tend to
increase risk.
• Lack of exercise
• Family history of prostate cancer

The American Urological Association (AUA) recommends that men ages 55 to 69
discuss the benefits and harms of prostate cancer screening with their doctors.
4. Types of Prostate Cancer Screenings
Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
A DRE is a physical rectal exam given by a doctor or nurse who is feeling the prostate for
lumps, abnormal size, or anything else that seems unusual.
Prostate-specific Antigen Test (PSA)
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a protein produced exclusively by prostate cells. A
blood test is performed to measure your PSA level and this may help to detect early
prostate cancer. The chance of having prostate cancer goes up as your PSA level
increases. However, a PSA level of ≥ 4 ng/ml does not automatically mean you have
cancer. An elevated level can also be due to other conditions, such as benign
enlargement of the prostate (BPH), a urinary tract infection or a prostate infection.
If the doctor suspects prostate cancer, a biopsy of the prostate may be done. Then
treatment options will be thoroughly discussed.
