  4. 4. <ul><li>This is the govenor of bev perdue anThen-Lt. Governor Perdue led our state's efforts during the Defense Department's Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, successfully protecting North Carolina's military bases worth $18 billion and 350,000 jobs to our economy. </li></ul>
  5. 5. <ul><li>It was adopted in 1943 and it’s a cardinal. </li></ul>
  6. 6. <ul><li>By the end of the 1930s, a movement had gained steam to adopt an official state flower in North Carolina. </li></ul>

State motto <ul><li>Motto, Esse Quam Videri (To be rather than to seem) </li></ul><ul><li>The General Assembly of 1893 adopted the words &quot;Esse Quam Videri&quot; as the State's motto and directed that these words with the date &quot;20 May, 1775,&quot; be placed with our Coat of Arms upon the Great Seal of the State ( Session Laws 1893, c. 145 ). </li></ul>

State nicknames <ul><li>Name (Carolina) and Nicknames (The Old North State or The Tar Heel State) </li></ul><ul><li>Carolina </li></ul><ul><li>The word Carolina comes from Carolus, the Latin form of the name Charles. </li></ul><ul><li>In 1629, King Charles I granted territory in America to his Attorney General, Sir Robert Heath, to be named Carolina , or the province of Carolina (though later in the same charter the province is referred to as Carolana or New Carolana ). </li></ul>

  11. 11. The pine tree <ul><li>The pine was officially designated as the State Tree by the General Assembly of 1963. ( Session Laws , 1963, c. 41 ). Contrary to popular belief, no specific type of pine tree was specified in the Session Law. </li></ul>

N.C. flag <ul><li>North Carolinashall consist of a blue union, containing in the center thereof a white star with the letter N in gilt on the left and the letter C in gilt on the right of said star, the circle containing the same to be one-third the width of the union.   Get this Flag </li></ul>
