An Apocalypse of Ice; chapter 4

 1. 1. Winter Is Coming: An Apocalypse of Ice
Chapter 4, “Try To Move Your Feet”
2. 2. Eowyn grew up badly and proceeded to take her anger out on everyone possible, even grumbling her way through her wedding to Kennedy. Two bolts could not make her feel better about not going to college. The job market was her first target. How could there be no need for doctors when people were hurt and suffering everywhere? She begrudgingly took a job as a playground monitor, figuring that she could work her way up the career ladder and make sure none of her children had to go without a college education. What else could she do? Sit around the house without making a financial contribution? Eowyn had enough of that as a teen.Sansa became her next target. Now that she had married Kennedy, Sansa wouldn’t stop bothering her about grandchildren. “Mom, you know they’ll fire me if they know I’m pregnant. Stop bugging me about it!” But Eowyn felt strangely peaceful after meditating her way through the pregnancy and giving birth to a son.
3. 3. Looking into his brown eyes, she thought she felt too peaceful. Sansa had told Eowyn that having children was a joy. But when Eowyn looked at her son, she hardly felt anything at all. She knew that she’d do whatever she had to do in order to give him a good life. But she didn’t know what to do now that the sun was coming up and she was holding a baby.He looks funny, Eowyn finally decided, raising her other hand to tickle him. Just because their living situation was grim didn’t mean that she couldn’t have a little fun. Did I ever look that funny? She named him Brandon, as her mother had asked, and went downstairs to feed him a bottle before work.
4. 4. As Sansa descended the stairs after giving Brandon a cuddle and changing his diaper, her muscles aching, she saw Addison standing by the statue he had brought back from his great adventure and smiling, just like he used to when they were in college. “May I have this dance?” he asked.Sansa found herself smiling. Her task hadn’t been easy, but Addison could bring a smile to her face every day, no matter what. “Of course.”
5. 5. “It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite songYou can’t believe it, you were always singing alongIt was so easy and the words so sweetYou can’t remember, you try to feel the beatEeeeeeet, eet, eet, eet”She loved him, plain and simple. He wasn’t the one she had expected to find, but if she had to do it all over again, she wouldn’t have chosen to restart her family with anyone else. Sansa remembered the day when she showed Addison that it was possible to live in this land again, even with everyone against them. She held him as tightly as she could.
6. 6. “You spent half of your life trying to fall behindYou’re using your headphones to drown out your mindIt was so easy and the words so sweetYou can’t remember; you try to move your feet”And what a family they’d started. They weren’t perfect, like in the songs. Once she had imagined that she would be queen and her children would be beautiful blond princes and princesses. But Sansa knew beyond a doubt that Eowyn was strong enough to survive. She only wished that her daughter had a kinder heart. Sansa liked to think that kindness could be more than just a luxury for when times were good.
7. 7. But even with all they had done, there was still so much to do before this cruel winter would be over. Sansa finished her snow angel and looked at Addison and Eowyn. “Remember that money isn’t the most important thing—” she called out, but her words died on the wind.Sansa couldn’t move her feet.
8. 8. “SANSA STARK,” Death addressed her. “COME WITH ME.”Out of the corner of her eye, she was aware of Addison and Eowyn weeping. Sansa tried to memorize Addison’s face in her last moments. She knew her time had come, but she didn’t want to leave behind the only home she had ever known, the home that she had seen destroyed and rebuilt. “Will…will I see…”
9. 9. “YOUR PARENTS AND YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTER WILL BE THERE,” Death told her. “THEY WAIT FOR YOU IN A LAND WHERE THERE IS NO MORE WINTER.”Sansa wiped a tear from her eye. It would be good to see her family again and show them that she had started making their world a better place, even though they couldn’t be there to see it.
10. 10. Sansa leaned forward and accepted the drink that Death offered her, then picked up her suitcase to leave winter behind forever.
11. 11. The wind died down, leaving Addison and Eowyn alone with nothing but the grave and the snow angels to remind them that Sansa had been there.“What do we do now?” Eowyn asked after a long silence. She felt numb again, and not only from the cold. She might have lashed out at her mother from time to time, but she had always been there, no matter what.Addison put his arm around his daughter and led her back to the house. He also felt lost without Sansa, but he knew what his wife would have said. “We…we finish the work that she started, dear.” His voice cracked as he spoke, but he tried to be strong for Eowyn.
12. 12. But Brandon didn’t allow them to mourn for long. He became a toddler one day later and promptly demanded as much attention as he could possibly get from two parents trying to get to the tops of their careers. As a super-outgoing Sim, it didn’t surprise anyone that he took to learning how to talk like a fish takes to water. “Mama!” he exclaimed, repeating his first word after Eowyn.Eowyn clapped. “Go Bran!”
13. 13. Addison spent the most time looking after Brandon. He quit his job after Sansa died so that someone would be home while Eowyn and Kennedy worked. Eowyn had become an elementary school teacher, and Kennedy was rapidly rising through the ranks of the army. Even though Addison missed being an international Sim of mystery, which had happened after a demotion from space piracy, he knew it was for the good of the family.“Maybe you’ll be able to go to college, kiddo,” Addison thought out loud as he placed Brandon back on the floor. “One more time. Walk to me.”
14. 14. Addison knew that Eowyn and Kennedy were trying to get to the tops of their careers as quickly as they could to make sure that Brandon would have a better life. They were fortune Sims, like him. Addison also knew how much it had bothered Eowyn to be stuck in the house with nothing to do but skill and no hope of a college education. On the other hand, it alarmed him that neither one of them seemed to be particularly interested in their son. Brandon kept asking for his parents as soon as they learned how, but they hardly ever came to play with him or snuggle him. Addison knew that he wouldn’t be able to look after Brandon for much longer.
15. 15. Addison approached Kennedy while Eowyn was meditating her way through her second pregnancy to explain this to him. However, Kennedy was not receptive to his concerns. “How dare you try to tell me how to take care of my son! You’re a fortune sim too. You should understand that I’m just trying to get a better life for him.”
16. 16. “Well, I couldn’t give two hoots about whether your feelings are hurt.” Addison made a face. “I want the best for my grandchildren, and that means parents who actually pay attention to their kids. Brandon’s constantly asking me where you are, and now that you’ve got another one on the way, that’s someone else who’s going to be asking for you.”“Tell him I’m working. He’ll understand when he’ll be able to leave the house and invite people over that it’s all for the best.”
17. 17. Neither one managed to convince the other of his position.
18. 18. Brandon learned his skills in no time, so Addison woke up with him and read to him to keep the busy toddler occupied. He picked a tale written before the disaster, trying to show Brandon what the world had been like and what it could be if he worked hard. “Whas’ a song?” Brandon asked.“I’ll turn on the stereo sometime and you can listen to one,” Addison explained. He didn’t listen to the stereo much, because he had long since gotten tired of the same tapes he had brought back from college, but maybe Brandon and the new baby would enjoy them.
19. 19. Eowyn didn’t particularly want more kids, but she knew that having more potential heirs could only be good for the rebuilding effort. Still, labor pains forced her to reconsider her position.
20. 20. “OW…I AM NEVER DOING THIS AGAIN!!”
21. 21. But she spun around and delivered another healthy baby boy. This time, Kennedy chose his name: Malcolm. Eowyn smiled and tickled him, then proceeded to return to work. She had a guest lecture to deliver at a new university that the authorities were trying to establish, and she didn’t have any time to waste.
22. 22. Brandon became a child on the same day that Malcolm was born. He naturally gravitated to the chess table, where his mean streak reared its head.Sucker! I can move the pieces around and he’ll never know what hit him! Brandon began to reach out, not even knowing what move he wanted to make.
23. 23. “CHEATER! I thought Starks were supposed to be honorable!” Orlando Centowski complained as he turned back and saw Brandon reaching out.“Yeah, well, Mama says honor is a luxury during the apocalypse.” Brandon shrugged. “Deal with it.”
24. 24. Meanwhile, Addison felt weary. He spent hours standing in front of Mal’s crib one day, to be interrupted from his trance only when Kennedy asked him to move so he could give the baby a bottle. He was slowly coming to think that he had done all he could for his family, and that all he could hadn’t been enough. Even though the gold statue, Eowyn’s bookcase, and the hanging ferns showed what they had done, he wanted to do more. Addison felt that he should have been able to give the family everything they could have had before the disaster, from cars to paintings to sculptures. Failing that, he just wanted to be with Sansa again.
25. 25. When Addison died, Malcolm took his death the hardest. Addison had always come when he woke up and no one was there, and he always seemed to be up for a tickle or for tossing him in the air. Kennedy quit his job so that Eowyn could keep hers and tried to teach Malcolm all his toddler skills, but he was never quite sure how to be a good father.
26. 26. However, Kennedy’s dedication to his job actually did pay off. For one of the first times ever, a Stark’s honor actually paid off, as Kennedy court-martialed his commander’s son despite intense pressure to pardon him and exposed a good deal of corruption. He earned a promotion to commander, quickly followed by a tour in space before becoming the General of Winterfell and leading a successful campaign against the outlaws.
27. 27. Just like Brandon gravitated toward the chess table, Malcolm quickly discovered that pillows were a lot of fun. Both brothers were neat and constantly complained about how they couldn’t get clean, but other than that, they were total opposites.“Ew! You stink, Mal!” Brandon shouted. “Stop hitting me!”
28. 28. “You smell worse!” Mal responded. “I’m gonna hit you again!”“No! Wait! I yield!”Mal, I wouldn’t listen to him if I were you.
29. 29. Soon, Brandon and Malcolm had a new brother, whom they named Julian.
30. 30. “Now that I can’t go to school anymore, I’ll have to stay here and keep an eye on you, won’t I?” Brandon mused as he held Julian. Brandon had never loved school, but now that it was gone and he was stuck with another dirty brother, he missed it. He dreamed that he might be able to go to college. Like Kennedy, Brandon wanted to earn $100,000, and a college degree would help him out a lot. His dad had opened up the roads, so maybe if his mom could take control of the education system, his dream could actually come true….
31. 31. Notes
The quantity and quality of my photographs are about to improve! I think I started taking more photos when Brandon and Mal became teens, and I know for sure that my camera settings will have ramped up in time for Joule’s teen birthday.
My sincere apologies to Addison for failing to take enough pictures of him. He was the kind of Sim who really flew under the radar. He became a Space Pirate unobtrusively and was the best spouse Sansa could have asked for, in addition to being a great grandpa to Brandon and Mal.
As for missing Eowyn’s transition to adult and her wedding, I actually have an excuse for failing to take pictures this time: I felt so awful about her breakdown that I didn’t have the heart to photograph it 
My name scheme is for characters who can survive apocalyptic conditions, with a little ASOIAF flavor thrown in:
Eowyn: Eowyn, Lord of the Rings (7/4/7/6/2, Scorpio)
Brandon: Brandon “Bran” Stark, A Song of Ice and Fire (9/9/7/3/1, Aries)
Malcolm: Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly (9/4/2/7/9, Capricorn)
Julian: Julian “Bean” Delphiki, Ender’s Shadow et seq. (9/9/9/3/1, Aries)
Credit for the song playing during Sansa and Addison’s last dance and the title of the chapter: “Eet” – Regina Spektor
Next time on An Apocalypse of Ice…
32. 32. “I may be the cutest Stark yet.”You and your little brother, who is a clone of you. This is my heir presumptive for generation 4, if hissiblings aren’t better suited for it. I think he’ll be getting a Bachelor Challenge if I can successfully recreate him in Body Shop! So who is this kiddo? Who are his parents? Who earned the podium that he’s currently playing with? Keep tuning in to find out!
