  2. 2. • • Dry ice blasting, also known as C02 Blasting and Cryogenic Blasting, is an industrial cleaning method for various types of equipment and machinery It uses compressed air to accelerate frozen C02 pellets at high velocities to effectively strip and clean different types of surfaces
  3. 3. • • Dry ice blasting works through: • • • Pellet kinetic energy Thermal shock effect Thermal-kinetic effect For optimal results all three of these effects must be combined and adjusted based on the application.
  4. 4. • • Pellet kinetic energy is a direct product of the pellet mass and velocity over a set period of time. The specially designed nozzles allow for the greatest impact force possible, thus providing the greatest amount of kinetic energy
  5. 5. • • Although these pellets are being shot out at supersonic speeds, the effect of the pellet is minimal in relation to other materials used in the industry such as • • • Grit Sand PMB This softness exhibited by the pellets not only makes it ideal for preparation and removal applications.
  6. 6. • • • The thermal shock effect occurs due to sublimation of the C02 pellet upon impact. Since the pellet is changing from a solid to gas upon impact, heat is being absorbed due to the latent heat of the sublimation process. This rapid transfer of heat produces high shear stresses. • These stresses eventually cause rapid micro-cracks propagation between surface layers effectively causing what is known as a bond failure.
  7. 7. • • Due to the combined impact energy dissipation and rapid heat transfer, the C02 pellet immediately is transformed into a gas. This gas quickly expands in what is known as a micro explosion. • This micro explosion lifts the fractured coating particles from the surface material as detailed below.
