  1. 1. What's in food packaging? By Chrissy, Sinead and Oliver

Bisphenol A <ul><li>Bisphenol A is a chemical that has the potential to interfere with our endocrine(hormone)system.The ingredients that are used to coat the insides of some food cans and baby bottles contain Bisphenol A. This coating lets canned food be heated to kill bacteria without the metal in the can affecting the food contents. </li></ul><ul><li>So What Is The Problem? </li></ul>

Bisphenol-A <ul><li>A lot of developed countries have banned the use of this chemical in packaging (e.g.United Kingdom, America and many countries in Europe, however New Zealand has not. </li></ul><ul><li>This is a problem because it affects the male hormone system.Research suggests that it reduces the chance of producing children. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Phthalates <ul><li>Phthalates are a group of chemicals that have a variety of uses and are found in oils and a wide range of household items. Like Bisphenol A, Phthalates can leach into our food and cause problems within our endocrine system. Were you aware of this? </li></ul>

Review over chemicals <ul><li>Phthalates are found in a wide range of household items and food packaging like; glues, building materials, personal care products( make up, shampoo), detergents, childrens toys and waxes. </li></ul><ul><li>Phthalates also affect the endocrine system and hormones just like Bisphenol A. </li></ul>

Plastics <ul><li>Plastic (e.g. Gladwrap, containers) are common forms of packaging, that have the potential to leech out Bisphenol-A into our food </li></ul><ul><li>Most plastic is recyclable, but too many people do not care to recycle it </li></ul><ul><li>Our planet is getting polluted with needless waste </li></ul><ul><li>We must make the change! </li></ul>

Summing Up <ul><li>We’ve gone beyond recycling to investigate the composition of packaging and what these chemicals do to our bodies </li></ul><ul><li>Bisphenol-A is found in babies bottles, sports equipment, in the insides of cans and plastics 3 and 7. It can can cause cancer, affect our endocrine system,which in the long term may reduce a couples chance of producing children </li></ul><ul><li>Are these good enough reasons to act? </li></ul><ul><li>We think so! What do you think? </li></ul>
