Nouns <ul><li>DEF: person, place, thing, idea </li></ul><ul><li>Common – uncapitalized & general </li></ul><ul><li>Proper – Capitalized & specific </li></ul><ul><li>Abstract – only ideas, never proper </li></ul><ul><li>Concrete – pers, place, thing; can be either </li></ul><ul><li>Compound – 2 words to make a new “stand alone” noun; c/b 1-word, 2-word, or hyphenated. </li></ul>

Tricks <ul><li>Watch Proper Nouns vs. Proper Adjective; look at how the word is used in a sentence: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Christy likes Italian food. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Christy is a proper noun </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Italian is a proper adjective, modifies the noun “food” </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><li>Be sure the compound noun is a new word: </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Green bean (adj+N) vs. ice cream (compound N) </li></ul></ul></ul>
