Peter Kahn: Examples of research-led teaching at the University of Liverpool. Slides from the University of Liverpool Learning and Teaching Conference 2009.

The university is considering ways in which its teaching is led by research. This session will explore three examples of ways in which research-led learning is presently employed within the university, taken from practice within the School of Management, the School of Archaeology, Classics and Egyptology, and elsewhere. The session will begin with a brief introduction to the notion of research-led learning and teaching, and will allow time for discussion amongst participants.

Introduction<br />This session will explore examples of teaching at the university that are led by research:<br />Brief introduction to the notion of research-led learning and teaching.<br />Examples from the School of Management and the School of Dentistry.<br />Further examples taken from the floor. <br />Discussion with panel members on different aspects of research-led learning and teaching. <br />

Approaches<br />Research carried out by staff determines the subject content for educational programmes.<br />The curriculum addresses the skills needed to carry out research. <br />Students engage in research or other forms of enquiry linked to research processes. <br />Teaching informed by pedagogic research.<br />(after Griffiths, 2004)<br />

(Potential) Gains <br />Programmes more attractive to potential and current students , improved employability, develops graduates who are able to thrive in the knowledge economy, synergy with research, materials and facilities from research used to support teaching, topical, improved student engagement, improved student satisfaction, onus is shifted onto the students, allows one to address team working skills, professionalism or so on, shifts away from passive learning, builds in a social basis for learning, shifts students away from ‘absolute knowing’ to ‘contextual knowing’, allows one to offer distinctive provision to students, ... <br />

Content-driven<br />Reflects a well-established model for curriculum design that poses relatively few additional demands: <br />aligns well with developing new provision at post-graduate level<br />issues may arise in matching student demand/employment opportunities with the research agendas <br />

Skills-driven <br />Research methods courses are standard.<br />Teaching on skills needed to conduct research – critical thinking, problem solving, team working, creativity. <br />as preparation for dissertations and final year projects<br />first-year courses in mathematical reasoning and problem solving <br />courses focusing on scientific method, laboratory skills<br />‘Using podcasts and VLE resources to teach basic skills in the analysis and appreciation of Aegean and Greek painted pottery’<br />
    7. 7. Engagement-driven<br />Learning based on a process of research or enquiry<br />Problem-based learning, project work, small-scale investigations in groups, field work.<br />Learning based on an aspect of the research process <br />Discussion of research papers, attending research seminars, limited exercises of data collection or data analysis, peer review, peer editing, student conferences, student journals. <br />

Informed by pedagogic research <br />Draws explicitly on systematic enquiry and research into the process of teaching and learning.<br />Instruments or resources employed to support learning that were developed through research. <br />Revisions made in the light of research into the student experience.<br />Processes designed around theoretical perspectives or prior research. <br />
